Tricia’s Weight Loss Story
Since my teenage years I’ve been overweight. At my heaviest I weighed 335 lbs. Over the years there was always an excuse for why I’d pack on pounds – side effects of a medicine I was on, a work schedule where I couldn’t have a normal meal, a bad day equaled happy hour, etc. Over the years, when I would try to exercise and eat properly I’d succeed for short amounts of time, only to fall back into bad habits and get discouraged just as quickly as I succeeded. I was drowning.
About 2 years ago I started really thinking about my life, my weight, my habits and asking myself the tough questions. I realized my food choices were hurting me in ways beyond the change in pant sizes, and I had to do something to help myself. I had to change. I began researching options, attended several hospital run seminars, and talked with people who had weight loss surgery. I was close to committing to weight-loss surgery, but still wasn’t sure which procedure I’d have, and hadn’t even come close to picking a doctor. I was still torn. In the back of my mind, I wasn’t 100% convinced that weight-loss surgery was even the answer, it still felt like a cop-out. I needed more information, I needed to hear more from patients and doctors.
After reading about Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons/Dr. Alexander Abkin and his practice online, I decided to reach out for more information. I was told that a new patient seminar was three days away, would I come? Saying yes to attending that seminar was the first major step in changing my life. The comprehensive seminar included content from support staff as well an extensive presentation by Dr. Abkin. They talked about the variety of surgeries available, showed data to back each up, then had a former patient tell their story. What I learned that night was heads and tails above any prior seminar I attended. That night was the start of my journey to a new me. What I realized that night was key and it stays with me every day: weight loss surgery isn’t a cure all, it’s a tool. What you do with that tool is up to you.
I chose vertical gastric sleeve surgery and was off and running. Dr. Abkin and his staff are very helpful, thorough and compassionate partners in my journey both pre and post surgery. They not only answer my questions, they take the time to make sure I understand the answers given and know the appropriate next steps. Surgery of any type can be overwhelming, but Dr. Abkin and his staff made the process as comforting, informative and as smooth as possible. Dr. Abkin took the time to speak with me, open and honestly while working with my regular doctors to make sure everyone was on the same page. One of the more impressive aspects of the practice is how well all departments at Dr. Abkin’s office interact with one another. From insurance experts to the dietician and everyone in between, the office staff works exactly how we wish all doctors offices did. Another positive aspect is the extended post-surgery support groups, both online and in the office. Those meetings have been invaluable experiences, validating my thoughts, my experiences and learning/hearing from others both the good and the bad. To date, I am down 80 lbs and counting and cannot be happier with every aspect of the experience.
I highly recommend Dr. Alexander Abkin and his staff if you are considering weight loss surgery
