I just need to Thank Dr Alexander Abkin for giving me back my life! He said he could do it … and he did! I had the bypass 6 months ago and I’m down 90 pounds! I’m still in shock of how great i feel! Thank you for helping me believe it was possible. Without the support of your staff and patients i would not have gone through with it. Now i can’t imagine how bad my life would be if i HADN’T had the surgery. You are a kind person, awesome doctor and great motivator!

I just wanted to Thank Dr Abkin and everyone in his office for Doing what they do for the Patients. I guess it’s fair to say that people like myself Are Very “Needy” and Dr Abkin and the people in his office were there to help me through every Hoop the Insurance Threw at me. I have one of the many Insurances that would prefer to pay for all my medical issues and medicines rather than help me have the surgery and get healthy! Go Figure… anyway… We DID IT! Thank You For Caring and for sticking with me.
I had Gastric Bypass 3 months ago… i’m down 75 pounds and now the weather is better i’m ready to get walking! I’m thinking great things are around the corner for me. Thank You So Much for helping me get my Life Back! You guys are the best!

I just have to Thank Dr Abkin and his whole staff for helping me through a process that seemed very complex when i started. The people working there are very nice and they told me don’t worry we will help you and they did. My Insurance required me to do 6 months of classes, which seemed ridiculous but it was all worth it! Dr Abkin is a wonderful person and awesome Surgeon. I had the Sleeve with him in November and I can’t wait for Spring to really arrive so i can try to play golf again. Something I haven’t been able to do for 5 yrs due to health. Thank You So Much Dr. Abkin!

I am three years Post Op with Dr Abkin. I had my Realize band in 2010 and did great in the first year. But life happens and i was transferred with my job to Southern Jersey. I just wanted to come here and do a Long Overdue Thank You to Dr Abkin. Having WLS was the right thing to do, but I was afraid as lately I have gained a few pounds.
I called his office with a question about my band for my current physician. They were very helpful, shared the info I needed and also gave me info on their Online Support. I never thought I could still keep in touch even though I’m out of the area. Thank You for the pep talk and the online info. I feel like I am already able to refocus and get back to basics! Happy Holidays to Dr Abkin and his Staff!

As we near the end of 2013 I felt I need to make a shout out to my Favorite Surgeon, Dr Alexander Abkin. On Dec 7th was my 9th Anniversary of my Gastric Bypass with Dr Abkin. 9 years later and Dr Abkin is still very much a part of my life. This year Dr Abkin and I began an ONLINE Support Group for his patients that can’t find the time to come to the office for our monthly support groups. Dr Abkin’s program is very proactive. He and his staff are there for the patients Before, During and After the surgery. The In office support and the Facegroup Support allows his patients to keep in touch with other patients of the practice and with the office for any needs they may have.

I’d like to Thank Dr Abkin again for all he has done for me personally. In addition, for being there for the patients. We look forward to our visits from Dr Abkin and Dr Botvinov when they stop by our monthly meetings! Dr Abkin truly cares about his patients and loves to keep up with their progress. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Dr Abkin and all the staff at Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons of Morris!

Dr. Abkin was absolutely amazing. From the beginning he showed that he cared for my needs. He never told me what to choose or make me feel uncomfortable. His staff was also very sweet and helpful. Every physician I was referred to by dr. Abkin was just as wonderful as he was. My sleeve was performed dec. 9, 2013 and he was efficient. I needed no drains and I also had a hernia repaired during the process. If I had to do it all over again I would. I love Dr. Abkin and his team

Thank You Dr Abkin for giving me this Second Chance to get My Health and my Life Back. I previously had a Lapband with another surgeon. And.. I know it is patient driven, and apparently I didn’t have the license to drive it as I failed miserably. I’m fresh post op and have now had the Gastric Bypass. I’m already down 16 pounds! It’s amazing how good this works when you have the right set of guidelines to follow. Not to mention with Dr Abkin and his entire Staff, Medical Associates, and even the other patients are they to cheer me on.
I’m so Excited to be on my weight Loss Journey with Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons! They are the Best! Dr Abkin.. you are a fantastic Surgeon and even better a Great Person as you truly care about your patients.

I have say that I am SO thrilled to have picked Dr Abkin’s group to have my surgery. He is an awesome man and I am so happy that i got word last week that my surgery has been approved. I will have surgery in First week of January and it will be a NEW YEAR FOR ME for Sure. I have been attending his support groups while I completed my Medically Supervised Weight Loss Classes (needed by my insurance NOT DR ABKIN). I can say that the group in his office is great and the patients have been so helpful even to me.. a Newbie just planning out my journey! Thanks to Dr Abkin, his Staff and his Patients… I’ve already decided that for Next Labor day I’m running a 5K in my hometown!

I have thought about Weight Loss Surgery for 5 years but was afraid to do it. Then my husband decided he wanted to try it. He had surgery with Dr Abkin two months ago and is already down 45 pounds. I can’t believe how quickly his health has improved. I tagged along with him to his one month post op and I’m now scheduled for Bypass myself in January!
Thank You Dr Abkin for helping my family! You are a great doctor and an awesome person! He tells you how it is, and he’s usually spot on! His Insurance Specialists were great at helping us to get done everything we needed to so we could move forward. Thank You Ryan and Heather!

But i felt if i turned to surgery I’d be quitting on myself. Thanks to Dr Abkin and the wonderful people in his office I have learned that having the Surgery will Help me get my Health back. I now feel i’m choosing to LIVE and the Surgery is the tool that will help me get my weight under control and get healthier.
Dr Abkin is such a nice guy he answered any question I threw at him and always gave me the time i needed. Thanks to Dr Abkin and all the staff that have helped me to get my paperwork and Insurance in order. I can’t wait for my Surgery which is set for October. I cannot say enough about Doctor Abkin. I had two operations. The first done in April 2013 to remove my Lap Band that was put in 7 years ago by another Doctor. That Lap Band never worked and I finally decided to get it removed. I found Doctor Abkin from my general Doctor. Dr. Abkin made me feel comfortable on choosing to remove my lap band which was a good call. When it was removed it was on not in the correct place and the tubing was attached to my liver. On July 15 I had Gastric Bypass and I am very happy. His cut marks are a work of art. I told him I could not believe how small they were and he did good work…he laughed and looked and said “Yes I did”. He is all for his patient. He made sure in the hospital I got the correct care and needs. I had my first follow up and he took his time with me to answer all my questions. Anyone looking for a great doctor I highly recommend Dr. Abkin. He has helped my get on the right track to my heath. He also has a wonderful staff and his RN Pat is wonderful as well.

I had the gastric sleeve done on August 7, 2012 and throughout the whole process Dr. Abkin and his staff were very supportive and helped me along the way. It is a very scary and important decision to make and not once was I pressured or felt like I was alone. I go for all of my checkups and the routine blood work and I was surprised to find out that Dr. Abkin actually made the time to meet with my primary doctor as well. I don’t think I would have gone through with any of it if they all didn’t make the process so much easier. I am down 66 lbs to date and it has slowed down a little but I feel much healthier. I have no regrets at all and I would recommend him to anyone.

Thank You Doctor Abkin for giving me back my Love of the Spring Time and more importantly LIFE! Ten years ago I was in a car accident that left me with Back Pain. As the years have gone on i have become less active and gained more and more weight.

Winters had become an excuse for me to hibernate and that really just made my life worse. I used to love Spring and this year I am so excited for it again!

Last fall I took a brave step out of my house to attend one of Dr Abkin’s Seminars. It changed my Life! He changed my Life! Even though this winter was another cold one… having had my surgery seem to give me new energy and i was so motivated after dropping 30 pounds the first month after my surgery! Now Spring is here.. I’m down 78 pounds and still loosing… I look forward to getting outside and walking and already my back pain is getting better!

Thank you to everyone in Dr Abkin’s office for helping me to get everything done so i could move forward. But especially to Dr Abkin for giving me Hope, Taking Great Care of Me, and being a great cheerleader! This is the Best Spring I’ve had and I’m excited to see what the Summer will bring!

As time has gone on, I realize more and more what an excellent surgeon Dr.Abkin is. Some people have told me that they were not treated too well by their doctors after their first follow up visit (I guess that’s like…okay…you’re okay…I’m done with you) and then they see the nurse when they go. Not with Dr. Abkin. I guess if you want more flexibility, you can see another doctor or the physician assistant, but he’s just as happy to see you himself. He is such a pleasure to work with on this journey…you truly need the support and caring of a good surgeon.

I recall the slightest bit of fear just before I was given my pre-surgery sedative (ha! after that happy med who cares?) and I was a little anxious; I just wanted to see my doctor before surgery and time was getting short. But, in walked Dr. Abkin and smiled at me, asked if I had any questions or concerns….I took his two hands and said something like God bless these hands….I felt right then and there a connection…and a great peaceful feeling that I was going to be just fine. There is a lot to be said for the look in someone’s face, and the calm demeanor one has before such a monumental moment such as surgery; changing someone’s body. That seems like such a long time ago….but it was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was positive…he was friendly and genuinely interested in hearing my concerns. My sister in law had been a patient 2 years before and referred me to him. I was instantly pleased! I was more impressed when I attended seminars pre-op classes and worked with his nurse and nutritionist. He is very confident, but not arrogant or cocky. He’s a regular guy who happens to change people’s lives incredibly.

I am a patient of Dr Abkin. My gastric bypass surgery took place a little over 2 weeks ago. The surgery was successful and I had little pain, discomfort or inconvenience. I was working from home after 1 week and doing Christmas baking after 1-1/2 weeks. Dr Abkin and his staff managed all preparation I needed for the surgery (insurance, etc). At times it was a small challenge to have phone questions responded to, but overall the staff, though busy, handled everything well. My thanks to the doctor and his staff for assisting me through this time.

Dr. Abkin did an excellent job. No complications to speak of. Office staff was professional and courteous and really helped me deal with the insurance hurdles (even amidst Hurricane Sandy).

Dr. Abkin is a NJ Top Doc and has been for many years. I felt that from his pre-surgery consults through to his post surgical office visits, he has always been kind and helpful and honest. And in my mind there is no doubt that the honors bestowed upon him for his surgical acumen are much deserved. In short…he put in a Realize band, and didn’t leave his watch behind (which would be tough to do laproscopically!

It was around my 28th birthday when I finally recognized that I was seeking deeper and deeper into depression from many things including my weight. After some journaling and talking to a firend, I decided that weight loss surgery was what I wanted to do because even though my weight was only one of my problems, it was the only thing that I could take control of. I had tried other diets like everyone and everything worked…until I stopped following that program to the most minute details.

When I decided to have weight loss surgery, I told my dad and he was supportive. My mom, not so much. I took her to a seminar with Dr. Abkin and not only did he answer every unanswered question I had after doing countless hours of research, but he also gave my mom a lot of answers to her questions as a concerned parent. His presence and confidence in the room made both of us extremely comfortable with him. He sat down and talked to us one on one after the seminar to talk about some things I had concerns about but was maybe a little embarrassed to ask because of my age in the group. Of course like any person should do, I went with my mom and met with other surgeons, but none of them made us feel as comfortable as Dr. Abkin did.

I went for my initial consultation and knew in the examining room that Dr. Abkin was the surgeon for me. His office guided me through the process, which was actually a lot easier than I thought and although the waiting was the worst part, they encouraged me that everything would be okay.

After my surgery, Dr. Abkin showed up and asked how I felt and told me what to expect and I felt very confident leaving that day that I had not only chose the right surgeon but that I had chosen a surgeon who actually cared that I succeeded after I left the hospital that day.

Since my surgery, I have been to Dr. Abkin’s office and he answers any and all new questions I have because this is a journey and not the easiest to adjust to.

If anyone were ever to consider having this surgery, not only would I encourage it under the correct circumstances, but I would also highly recommend Dr. Abkin and his staff as the people to help guide you on this journey.

Dr Abkins passion for bariatric surgeory is completely realized during the first meeting with him. He is completely sure of his abilities in a nonarrogant but confident manner, which made me feel like I selected the correct surgeon for my situation. He is extremely thorough in his explanations, has great bedside manners and if I were to have this surgeory again I would only recommend DR. Abkin.

I already had gastric bypass and initially did good with it. After having my children… i found old eating habits creeping back into my life. Just when i thought there was no help I met someone who had used Dr Abkin’s Group. They invited me to a support group and i got my head back in the game.

I am now scheduled to have a Band over Bypass with Dr. Abkin and can’t wait to start my journey all over. This time with the help of his Support Group I will stay focused and get the job done! Thank you to Dr Abkin and his support staff for being my angels!

My experience with ALS was excellent. Dr. Abkin is a compassionate physician and a gifted surgeon. The comprehensive program covers everything you need to know and the support groups are very good. Most impressive is the follow up care that includes an annual check up. I lost 110 lbs and have kept it off for 7 years by following the program. I can only give this program and Dr. Abkin my highest recommendations.

June 17, 2011 I had a Gastric bypass performed by Dr Alexander Abkin. I was scared leading up to the surgery, but his team at JFK , Edison, NJ was fabulous! They put things into perspective, they helped with a diet plan, they reminded me when I needed blood work. They made sure I was both mentally and physically prepared for the surgery. Dr Abkin’s performed the surgery with his team and I was as happy post surgery as anyone having gone through this could be. I took no pain managment drugs after the removal of the pump (pain management) and I was walking the same day. Dr Abkin is a warm and kind person, he smiles at you and tells it like it is. I would highly recommend him to anyone. I still have some weight to loose, but I have lost in a year ~120 lbs… I started at 268 and now am 150. If you are looking for a surgeon who is good, and office which manages you well (pre and post-op) He is your surgeon. Best of luck to all who choose this path. jfkmc.org/jfk-bariatric-surgeons

I have been thinking about Weight Loss Surgery for a while now. But after speaking to a co-worker who had the Bypass with Dr. Abkin and seeing how well that person is doing I finally made the decision and came to Meet Dr Abkin myself.

He is a great guy! His office was set up to deal with people “OF SIZE” life myself. He made me feel very comfortable and made it easy to discuss my sitauation and what benefits i could expect with weight loss surgery.

I came out of the consult with a new outlook on what my Life Can Be! Thank You Dr Abkin!

His Insurance Specialist was great and she put together a checklist of what I need to get done and back to her to submit for authorization. I am so ready to get Healthy and Get My Life Back! Thank You Dr Abkin for giving me HOPE!

I couldn’t thank Dr. Abkin enough for such a positive life changing experience. My surgery date for lap band was april 17th 2012 I weighed in at 230 lbs. Today, may 3rd 2012 was my 2 week post op visit and I weighed in at 208 lbs. I feel amazing, beautiful, healthy and full of energy that I haven’t had in years! Dr. Abkin was hand in hand with me from begining to the end. From the million and one questions to multiple consult visits he never let me down. I was so excited today at my visit that I hugged him saying ” thank you I truly couldn’t have done this with out you”. It’s the truth. I also want to add that every single staff member nurse, receptionist, insurance (heather you were great), Trish the nurse practioner, everyone is extremely helpful and will always be there for you. I myself know I probably drove them a little nuts but they never let me down. I would recommend anyone who needs the help and wants to live a longer, healthier, lifestyle to use Dr. Abkin. Thanks again Dr. Abkin and staff!

Dr. Abkin is my hero! The decision to have bariatic surgey was made so much more easier after meeting with Dr. Abkin. He is a caring person in conjunction with being a skilled surgeon and medical doctor. I found it so comforting that he talks to you so that you understand the process you will be going through. His office staff is excellent. Everyone makes you feel that you are the most important person who has waked into the office. I knew so much about my surgery that I felt so comfortable with the procedure. Every step of the process is thoroughly explained to you. If you have any questions, they are answered until you are satidfied. Dr. Abkin will recommend other physicians if you need them regarding any other health issues you might have. The follow-up from his office staff is wonderfal. I am beginning my new life journey and I can not thank Dr. Abkin enough.

Doctor Abkin preformed the vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure on me in May 2011. He was a great surgeon to have and will work with you to make sure that you get all the care that you need. Additionally the staff at Dr. Abkins office was amazing. The insurance department will do everything they can to make sure you get your surgery. Advanced Laproscopics of Morris provided an extremely supportive environment and I am so thankful for everything they have done.

I believe Things Happen for a Reason! I work at St Clares and have been thinking about weight loss surgery. I have just been to chicken to move forward and actually attend a seminar and get the ball rolling. I know several people at the Hospital who have done it and they have told me how good Dr Abkin is and so nice. But i still was nervous.

Then it happened… I ran into a nice man while i was preparing a room for a meeting. He was very easy to talk to kind, and when I asked his name… it was Dr Abkin… the very Surgeon who my friends had referred me to.

I told him my little story and he laughed and said Things Do Happen for a Reason! I felt so comfortable in our short conversation he told me not to worry he would have someone from his office that actually HAD the SURGERY would call me to answer any questions I had.

I’m not nervous anymore… now i’m actually excited as I’m on my way to getting Insurance Approval and having my Surgery.

Thank you Dr Abkin and your Staff for being there and being SO NICE!

I meet Dr.Abkin many years ago through a Dr. that I worked for in the morristown area, my first impression of Dr.Abkin was wonderful, he was very professional, polite and just spoke highly of his work. His first impression stuck with me years after i stopped working for that Dr. When I decided that I was going to go for weight loss surgery, I went to other seminars with different doctors, but just did not feel a good vibe. So time went on and I came across Dr.Abkin’s name and rembered how much a wonderfiul Dr he is and I googled his name and found his office. I was happy that I was able to find him….I went to one of his seminars and had a very good feeling about him and his practice. I scheduled my consult with him and have been with his office ever since…I would not go to any other Dr. Dr.Abkin makes you feel so at ease with what goes along with weight loss surgery. HE explains everything to you in detail, from before surgery to after surgery and then you journey. My impression about Dr.Abkins just gets better. Just a wonderful Dr. to deal with when it comes to your health and life.

His office staff helps make the process alot easy.. They go through it with you from start to finish. Messages get to the right people and are always returned in a timley fashion.

After surgery in your follow up he talks about the healing process and also what comes along with weight loss surgery. He takes time to answer all you questions and explains everything in good detail. He addresess the risks of surgery to cover all absects of it. I would rate Dr Abkin on a very high level. He is a wonderful Dr., he takes his job to another level and takes your life in his hands. I am completley honored to have him as my surgeon and feel so at ease with my journey to weight loss and my decesion of having him as my Doctor. He has great bed side manner and wonderful surgical competence.

I would like to thank Dr.Abkin and his practice of the care of my health

Thank you.

I was referred to Dr. Abkin by a friend for my father. Weight loss surgery never crossed my mind. It was my father I was most concerned about. He had many health problems and he had tried everything. In August of 2011, Dr. Abkin allowed my father to celebrate his “rebirth!” I have seen all of my father’s health problems fade away (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and much more). He is a changed man, who exercises on a regular basis and has his life back.

As he began his weight loss, I thought…” maybe I should research this for myself.” At the age of 33, I was beginning to experience similar health problems. I wanted to be around for my 3 children, as well as lead a healthier life. My father was my inspiration. In December of 2011 I had gastric bypass and celebrated my rebirthday! To date I have lost 30 pounds and I feel FABULOUS! My helth issues have gone away, I exercise regularly and have so much more energy. Dr. Abkin gave me a second chance.

Dr. Abkin has wonderful bedside manners, and he put me at ease from the very beginning. He answered all of my questions, no matter how silly they sounded. I never felt rushed during my appointments. Dr. Abkin is very encouraging and genuinely cares for ALL his patients! I have him to thank for my new beginning!

My surgery (roux-en-y sic) was performed in June 1999 and within 14 weeks I lost 105 lbs. In the intervening years I only gained back 8 lbs and I will be 69 in a few weeks. While bariatric surgery may not be the answer for all people, in my particular case I view it as a lifesaver. I no longer need the C-PAP for sleep apnea and all my other medications have been reduced subsequent to the surgery and following weight loss.

From his first hand shake to my first follow up visit 1 week after surgery, I knew I had been placed in great hands. A good friend recommended Dr. Abkin after her surgery and I’m ever so grateful. From his overall approach of solely caring about your health, what your needs are were so different to me from any other doctor I’ve dealt with in my adult life. At 53, I had made the decision to get healthy. With HBP & Type 2 Diabetes, I knew it was going to be something I had to do because all my doctors ever wanted to do were to throw more pills into me & a shot. It is now 12 days since my gastric bypass, and I’m happier then I could have imagined. Thank you Dr. Abkin!

At the age of 36 I came to the realization that I had to do something about my climbing weight and my miserable health. I was diagnosed with diabetes last year and started medication immediately. I had arthritis in my knees/ankles, SEVERE sleep apnea, shortness of breath going upstairs, fluid retention in my ankles, back pain and I woke up each morning miserable and wiped out. I had done Weight Watchers MANY times and would lose weight but could never keep it off. I was feeling desperate and hopeless.

I never thought I would go down the surgery path. I knew about the band, bypass etc but never thought it was for me until a friend started to talk to me about her interest in it. I went to a seminar with her and I realized that this could actually help ME. I knew it was not a quick fix or a “cure-all” but I hoped it would give me a fresh start, the discipline I needed and a good start to changing my life and health for the better.

Once I knew my insurance would cover it, I sought out 5 of the top bariatric surgeons in the area. I researched them carefully as well as the different procedures. I scrutinized the surgeons but also their office staff, nutritionists and and aftercare. Due to an intestinal history, no other surgeon would even consider bypass until I met Dr. Abkin. When I first met him, I knew he was an amazing surgeon with an excellent reputation. I wanted to know how he was as a person and how he would relate to me. I will admit that he came across as a bit cocky when we first met. He said he was confident but I did not hesitate to tell him I thought otherwise. I called him cocky and then proceeded to tell him that I wanted to know about his bed-side manner and how he relates to his patients. His expression, tone and attitude immediately softened when I told him how much this meant to me and that I needed him to be there for me throughout this journey.I demanded he see me as a person with family and friends…not just another stomach to staple. I asked to be treated like his sister. He assured me that I was going to be well taken care of and that he would see me through this. He had successfully performed bypass surgery on others with my history and assured me it was possible and would be successful. He was thorough in his explanation and I was appreciative of his honesty and his skills. He was warm and reassuring when I left. I knew in my heart he was the one. I knew he could/would change my life forever!

The staff was very kind, patient and supportive during the months prior to my surgery. Each time I called, my questions were addressed and answered quickly. Heather was a godsend dealing with my insurance. She bent over backwards making calls and taking care of questions and calls from them. Her tireless effort meant the world to me and when she called to tell me I was cleared and we were set, I wept. Thank you Heather for getting me there!

On August 22 I had my gastric bypass at St. Claires in Dover. I saw Dr. Abkin before the surgery and his warm smile and reassuring pat on the shoulder put me at ease. He assured me he would take good care of me. And that he did! The surgery went very well and I came home from the hospital DIABETES FREE! I have had to call the office with concerns and the nurse was kind and reassuring. I was seen by Dr. Bertha and was appreciative of his care and concern. When I developed a fever and had to call late at night, Dr. Ianacce was so nice and patient. He put me right at ease. l was losing quickly and was feeling better each day. My ankle swelling disappeared immediately. My back doesn’t hurt anymore, my arthritis is not effecting me and I can walk farther and longer without losing my breath. It’s amazing!

As of today, October 8th…I have lost 45 lbs. I have a long way to go but I am thrilled by the start I have had and the fact that I FEEL BETTER!!

Dr. Abkin…thank you for being such an amazing surgeon and for caring so much to see me through this. I am happy to go on this journey with you and I look forward to sharing my progress with you!!

I first met Dr. Abkin while attending an evening seminar at the doctors’ office. I went to the seminar, with many questions and a general fear of not knowing what to expect. I can honestly say that after I left that seminar, I was more determined than ever to have my procedure! The staff there was very helpful and answered any question or directed you to someone who could. This is the first major procedure I’ve had done, so it really made my decision to go ahead with the surgery an easy one. Anyone considering having surgery knows that the last thing you want to do, is get caught up with the red tape of handling the paperwork that goes along with this type of procedure, you have enough on your plate, so to speak. But that process is the least of your worries. The staff there works very well together, and for the most part, have a good handle on whatever it is, that you need, before you can continue to the next phase of your transformation. Everything is layed out for you to understand that this process can only be as successful, as you want it to be. There are help groups and chat rooms that specifically deal with any type question that you may have, whether questions before surgery, or after. I am one year removed from having Lap-Band surgery. I am happy to say that I have lost about 70 lbs. I feel great, and Dr. Abkin is the main reason why! He definitely put me on the right track, and I would recommend him to anyone that is considering weight loss surgery.

First, I must say that Dr. Abkin has CHANGED my life. I am 51 years old and have had both knees replaced, suffer from high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I was on a road to an early death if I continued on the path I was taking. I researched WLS for months online and finally found Dr. Abkin. He came highly reccommended by both my general practioner and my cardiologist. Beginning with the first phone call I made to his office, I always felt that I was someone special. His entire staff is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Dr. Abkin himself is a SHINING star!!! 🙂 Heather in the insurance department makes sure all the “T’s” are crossed and that everything is in order so that you know where you stand as far as any insurance problems/questions. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and feel WONDERFUL!!! I chose the Realize Lapband. I have lost a total of 24 lbs to date due to Dr. Abkin give me a TERRIFIC “TOOL” to use!!

This is not a quick fix….you must use the “TOOL” to the best of your ability….I would highly reccommend Dr. Abkin….He truly is a “MIRACLE WORKER”….I sincerely Thank You Dr. Abkin….you are my friend for life 🙂

Thank You Dr. Abkin for making my life better. I am able to move and do things for myself…. even if it means cleaning up the damage from the water in the basement. If this happened last year… I wouldn’t have been able to do it!

Deciding to have surgery and the fact I was able to LOOSE 80 pounds has made a Huge Difference in my Life! Thanks to Dr Abkin for caring about me… and helping me to do the right thing. Everyone had a Birthday. I am fortunate enough to have a RE-BIRTHDAY, Aug. 15th, 2011. I say that because that was the day I had Gastric Bypass Surgery. You see, at age 63 I got sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Sick of suffering from Hypertension, High Colesterol; Type II Diabetes; Polycythemia; and tired of suffering from sleep apnea. Knowing that as I aged, the symptoms of my ailments were likely to become life threatening; I turned to the Bariatric Medicine and Weight Loss Clinic at Morristown Memorial. In the past I have been successful with weightloss, but have always managed to gain it back once I was no longer focused on my program. Under the care of Dr. Rothkopf and with nutritional counseling I again was able to successfully lose weight, but realized the sands of the hourglass were working against me. As a result, I asked Dr Rothkopf if I was a candidate for gastric bypass. His answer was a resounding YES!

After reviewing a list of surgeons provided and conducting searches on the internet I chose Dr. Alexander Abkin to perform my surgery. I met with Dr. Abkin in middle of June and was assigned an August 15th surgery date, subject to securing the required approval from my insurance carrier.

I spent the next month securing letters of necessity and/or surgical clearances from the doctors who have kept me going for the past 30 years. As the surgery approached I leaned heavily on the support of family and friends.

“Cutting to the chase,” as my partner would say, the surgery was completed without a hitch. The schedule was kept almost to the minute and the pre-op and post-op care was excellent. I am now five days post op. I am pain free and drug free. As theorized, the operation itself and the hormonal changes wrought by it have resulted in the abatement of my Type II Diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. I have already lost 8 pounds and am concentrating on adjusting to life after bypass.

I thank all of you for your kind words and wishes. I am painfully aware that the operation is not a Magic bullet. And that, given my past history, I must remain diligent, committed and guard against back sliding. God willing and with the love and support of my family and friends I know I will be successful.

Ok, this is the same thing as going into a restaurant and ordering chopped steak rather than the filet mignon. When considering a surgeon for any reason, you always have to take into account that you are putting your well-being in someone else’s hands. Why would you not do extensive research and put yourself into the most competent hands you can find? Dr. Abkin and his entire staff at Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons are the gold star of this procedure. This is what they do. They are competent, from surgeon to nurse to secretarial staff. They couple this competence with kindness and compassion. This journey of mine has been awesome~ thank you Dr. Abkin and group for all youve done for me!

It has been one year since my Realize band surgery, and I have lost almost 70 pounds! I love Dr. Abkin’s approach to his patients. He is non-judgmental about patients’ weight problems. I do believe he has seen it all. He is kind and considerate, and he has given me great advice over the past year. I have had two band adjustments, and each time I have come close to fainting. He helps me through the procedure, each time reassuring me that what I am experiencing is normal. He does everything I can to make sure I am as comfortable as possible. Dr. Abkin is my hero, because he has changed my life for the better. This was BY FAR the best decision I’ve ever made.

I have to say I was very impressed with Dr. Abkin’s Staff. I am also very pleased with Dr. Abkin’s professionalism and his ability as a doctor. My daughter has been looking into this surgery for years and she is finally on her way to having it next month and Dr. Abkin was our choice. When you see your daughter struggle with weight I understand why she wants this but I had to make sure she was in “GOOD HANDS!” And with Dr. Abkin i have total confidence that everything will be done that needs to be and she will be fine.

I must admit now that the time is almost here, I myself am also considering some type of weight loss surgery and of course will be with Dr Abkin as well. I did have some questions as to which procedure would best suit me and was very impressed that people in his office would take time out of their busy days to talk to me, answer questions and even have me speak to another patient that had similar issues.

Thank You to Dr Abkin and to everyone who has helped me . You guys are the Best! I look forward to our journey together.

Thank You Dr. Abkin. This surgery has made such a difference in my Life. Things which should be “normal” for most people… require planning when you are morbidly obese. Now that I’ve lost over 60 pounds I’m already finding it easier to walk the stairs and I recently got on a plane and was not embarrassed by having to have the seat belt extension. I know I still have a ways to go to reach my goal… but I’m so motivated that i don’t think it will be a problem.

I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin’s group to anyone who is thinking about having weight loss surgery. His office staff is great at making sure the patients get things they need to get so they can proceed. And although it is a busy office, it’s fun to talk to the other patients as you wait for the docs. It’s like a mini support group. They also offer in office support groups monthly and an online support group once a month. In addition, the other facilities they operate at also have support groups. I have found attending those to be a great way to stay focused.

So THANKS Again Dr. Abkin and everyone who has helped in my Journey!

I just want to THANK DR ABKIN for making this 4th of July one that I can actually ENJOY and feel comfortable celebrating with my friends and family. This past winter I started on my weight loss journey with him. Now here it is 4th of July weekend and I actually feel comfortable wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt and sitting outside with friends and family. These last few years my weight stopped me from socializing as I was ashamed of what I had become… a Fat person…or MORBIDLY OBESE.

I attended a seminar with Dr Abkin and found him to be very caring and took the time to answer any questions or concerns i had about going through this type of surgery. His office really stresses the WHOLE Program and I have jumped in with both feet and it has been an awesome journey. I had the gastric bypass in January and I’m now 6 months and 90 pounds lighter. I’m not done but I sure am on my way and I am so much healthier and able to get out and enjoy myself,. Thank You Dr. Abkin and your entire staff who helped to make my process such a breeze!

The weight loss journey is never easy. However, I continue to be amazed and lucky to be assisted by Dr. Abkin and the members of his group. Every question is answered with time and thoroughness and sincere attention and concern. I recently had a Band adjustment, my first adjustment. not only was it a smooth, almost simple process, but again, my time with the Doctor was pleasant and even more importantly, it was encouraging. I continue to feel better than I have felt in years. My medical issues, including diabetes and sleep apnea, are light years better than before my surgery, and I continue to receive wonderful reports as to my blood sugar and other vital statistics. I am now bicycle riding with my family and enjoying my lifestyle.

Dr. Abkin, even 1 year after my surgery, treats me with care and concern and attention, not simply as a patient in for a follow up. I am convinced that my success and what I nkow will be my continued progress are a direct result of the level of medical care, treatment and attention given by Dr. Abkin.

Dr. Abkin, I continue to thank you for what you have done and what you will do for me.

FRom the beginning I felt not only comfortable but confident with Dr. Abkin. His explanations and his knowledge were impressive. Even moreso, when I met and spoke with him, he was truly interested and attentive. He spent time answering my questions and those of my wife. Havine now had the lapband surgery just 7 weeks ago i can truly day I did the right thing with the right Doctor.

I felt wonderful almost from right after the surgery. I had very little discomfort and as time has progressed I have felt better and better, stronger and with more energy. The weight is coming off, and even more importantly to me it is happening without problems or difficulties. I have really no pain after surgery. I follow the plan and eat right. It is not difficult if you are committed to a healthier and happier liefstyle. I still am able to enjoy going out to dinner and entertaining, but now I eat the right foods in the right portions.

Dr. Abkin has been with me every step of the way. Appointments with him are informative and again, he is attentive, truly interested and committed to asssisting me in my goals and new lifestyle.

Thank you Dr. Abkin.

Dr. Abkin is the epitome of what it means to be a great surgeon and great doctor.

Before I met him, I had researched him carefully (I am an MD myself) and was struck by the adjectives I kept hearing: concerned, patient, dedicated, knowledgeable, and a sensational surgeon with stellar results. At our first meeting I found that every single word was true. My wife and I spent over one and a half hours with him (I didn’t tell him I was a doctor until the end of the appointment) and he explained the surgery choices, the pre-op protocol and the follow up care. He made certain that every one of our many issues was covered and that we completely understood the risks of what the surgery entailed before he turned us over to his remarkably efficient scheduling staff.

They went over point by point what tests had to be done, what procedures needed to be performed and they told us they would be cutting through the health insurance red tape for me to be certain I was approved. Several tasks of the pre-op protocol were outsourced right there in their office which made it convenient and simple.

Every person I dealt with was courteous, well-informed and friendly. They even scheduled my first post-op visit right then so I would not have to remember to do that later. Over the intervening time prior to the surgery, I was contacted several times letting me know the progress of my insurance review, to make sure I had my necessary tests scheduled and so on.

One week before surgery I attended a 3 hour seminar to discuss in great detail what to expect starting the day before to a month afterwards. The handouts were self-explanatory and seemed to cover every contingency. After that I felt totally prepared for the major journey I was about to take.

On the surgery day, I went to a facility in the same building as Dr. Abkin’s office. Though I was nervous, the staff was so professional and engaged in my well-being it was easy to feel well taken care of. Dr. Abkin stopped by and offered encouragement.

My first post-op appointment was yesterday and again Dr. Abkin was thorough and unhurried. I know I have mentioned that a few times but so many physicians rush through their appointments that invariably you forget an important thing you wanted to discuss. Not so with this man!

One last point: from my reading I observed that many bariatric surgeons rush to do band adjustments even beginning as early as two weeks post-op. Dr. Abkin tailors band adjustments not to a fixed schedule but solely predicated to the patient’s needs. That was one of the biggest reasons I went to him.

This is one of the best doctors I have ever been to and I can say that with a lifetime of experience in medicine.

Dr. Abkin is the best. He has done surgery on my son and me in February 2011. My son has already lost 42 Lbs and I lost 20 lbs.

I was looking for a ‘Top Doc” who would do a laparoscopic lapband surgery in New Jersey. After doing some research and reading his patient reviews I decided to go with Dr. Abkin. He is a great surgeon, very knowledgeable and carrying person, always takes time to answer any questions you have. His staff is great too.

I would reccomend Dr. Abkin to anyone.

I had my surgery on May 3, 2011. The staff of the Florham Park Surgery Center were very Professional and very energetic as to the needs of their patients. Dr. Abkin is a first class surgeon. He explains all the details thoroughly and understands the struggles associated with being a “Fat Guy”. I am now twenty one days post op and have lost 35 pounds and feel like a new person already. Thanks Dr. Abkin, you have renewed my life and I look forward to the months ahead. Anyone who is thinking about this surgery, please go see Dr. Abkin. You will not be disappointed. I will recommend him and the staff at Florham Park Surgery Center to anyone that needs help.

Can’t say enough good things about Dr. Abkin. He was my surgeon in 2003 when I had RNY and I chose him again for Lap-Band Surgery in 2011. His program and office have changed a lot for the better, he is still a professional on top of his work and treatment program. Are you regaining weight after your original surgery, or are you looking for a qualified surgeon in your area? I highly recommend Dr. Abkin and his staff. His follow up program and both pre/post surgery programs are teriffic. Support all the way! He is a wonderful and caring doctor who will listen to your concerns and recommend the best path for you to follow. Thumbs up to Dr. Abkin and his staff for being change agents for all those seeking weight loss surgery.

Dr. Abkin is such a professional, his office staff is pleasant but you need to do a lot of follow up with them as they are so busy that they may not call back when you want them too. Dr. Abkin took the time to answer all of my questions and explain any complications and/or risks to the surgery he seems like a perfectionist and that is an admirable quality to have in a surgeon. He really takes the time out to hear what every patient is saying to him and I think he was glad that I had done so much research into the procedure.

Dear Dr. Abkin,

I found you and your office and I could not have asked for anything better. Your professionalism, communication, understanding, and time you have taken to know me as a patients means the world to me. The choice I made to have the LapBand procedure and more importantly putting myself in your hands and feeling safe I cannot ask for more. I’ve lost weight in 4 months and am happy with the results and more to go. I have found that my dedication, conscious effort, follow-up with you and having an open honest conversation about my progress and having a great nutritionist team to work with to help me with my checks and balances will help me reach my goal and a testiment to my success story. I will alway keep you in mind so thank you for being my surgeon and doctor. I am greatful to have met you.

So should anyone be looking for a great surgeon and office…I recommend Dr. Abkin and his team with flying stars!!! Thank you.

Once I met Dr. Abkin I knew I was in good hands. I am a lower bmi so he did tell me my weight loss would be slower but still was very encouraging. Surgery day was great I was home by 11:30 am and by luck of the draw I had no gas pains at all. I went to home depot the same day after the surgery. Well 2 weeks out and I feel awesome.

I was banded my Dr. Abkin 4/22/11. I decided to have Dr. Abkin do my surgery because he made me feel comfortable with my decision and was very respectful to me during our consultation. My husband was with me during my consultation and I requested that my weight not be revealed. Dr. Abkin was very professional as he spoke and was most sensitive and courteous to me and my embarrasment in front of my husband.

After I decided to do the surgery, Dr. Abkin and his staff were very nice and accomodating with appointments and trying to get me moving along. Pre op requirements at his office were very friendly and everyone recognized me everytime I came in. I also learned at one of these appointments that Dr. Abkin has a great sense of humor and made me feel that there was a level of comfortability.

Day of surgery, Dr. Abkin was all smiles and I was not. Again he made me feel good about my decision and explained everything in detail what would happen during and after surgery.

I just had my post op yesterday and I’m down a significant amount of weight and once again Dr. Abkin was very thorough in his exam and expectations of the next few weeks.

I would give Dr. Abkin an excellent overall rating. 2 weeks post op and 8 weeks since my decision to do this, there is not one negative thing to say about him 🙂

There is one negative and that would be about an office staff member. They are very short and pushy on the phone when you call but you don’t always get her, everyone else is very pleasant.

By far, this has been a wonderful experience and I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Abkin or his “crew”. The decision to have WLS was not one I made overnight, as a matter of fact it has taken several years of research, observation, thought and prayer. I was fortunate enough to have an “insider’s” opinion of Dr. Abkin as I worked as an RN at MMH and took care of his postop patients for a few years. I can say that Dr. Abkin is a skilled, dedicated and extremely well educated surgeon. I cannot imagine entrusting my life to any other. That being said I have to also commend Dr. Abkin’s exemplary staff in both his Florham Park office and JFK Fit for Life office in Plainfield. I have never met a group of people more dedicated and genuinely interested in my success. From Joanne (receptionist) who CAN DO ANYTHING and does it with a smile and a joke, to Trish and Pat, Dr. A’s nurses who are knowledgeable and caring. I could not have hoped for better and know that if I have a problem they are merely a phone call away. Dr. Abkin strongly urges his patients to adhere to the post op guidelines and really urges us to attend support group which is a testament to his dedication to our success. He’s not the kind of surgeon who merely does his part and detaches from his patients. He wants us to be healthy, happy and knows that it takes a team of specialists to give a patient the well rounded support they need. I am forever grateful to “The Team” for this new lease on life”.

Dr Abkin was my original Bariatric Surgeon back in 2004. He was awesome then and I have learned that his practice helps the patients through the WHOLE JOURNEY… I am a success story and I have lost over 100 pounds and managed to keep it off. I attribute that to staying involved with support groups and keeping in touch with the doctors.

His practice promotes coming back annually to have blood work done so the doctors can stay informed about their patients. Believe me when I say how important that is. We choose to have Gastric bypass and once we do it becomes our responsibility as patients to make sure we get our protein and fluids in. The doctors are invested in our progress and ask that we do Annual Blood Work to make sure our vitamin and mineral levels are still good.

I’ve recently had other health issues and Dr Abkin and Dr. Iannace were right there to help me! They know what Issues I have and were able to get me the help I needed! Thank You Dr. Abkin for being there. You are great and i Really Appreciate what you have done.

That is what brought me together with Dr. Abkin. Ice Cream was my weakness, my best friend and MY downfall! Happy Anniversary to the Ice Cream Sundae… and more Importantly THANK YOU TO DOCTOR ABKIN for Giving me back my life and always being there for me!

I lost 110 pounds and have learned through use of his resources how to manage my foods and keep it off! His program is great and I owe him alot! I love being a card carrying member of the DUMPING SYNDROME CLUB… and therefore I can even toast that Ice Cream Sundae with a few bites!

I never saw my self as someone needing this surgery but once you add all the other complications that come along with weight gain it was a challenge to maintain weight forget about losing weight. I thought about this for about a year and continued to find reasons on why I don’t need to do this surgery to lose weight. I had the will to do it on my own. I am here to tell you it is not will but it is a life style change that you have to adapt to and if you don’t have the correct tools it becomes an extreme challenge that you can’t measure up to so easily. Especially if you work odd hours and can’t schedule your life accordingly.

With this new tool provided to me it made me think differently and work differently. It brought back many years of missed enjoyment due to aches and pains over those years. It was truly due to Dr Abkins seminar and great support.

I want to Thank Dr Abkin for his patience and professionalism throughtout my process. He is the inspiration that made me continue on my path to great health and a new life journey. His staff are good but he is truly a great man with great care for all his patients before, during and after the procedure.

Thank you Dr Abkin for your advice and your availability to assist.

Upon meeting Dr. Abkin for the first time, I was immediately impressed with his friendly approach, eagerness to answer any and all questions, and willingness to take the time to explain everything. HE wasn’t rushed, like some doctors can be. Not to mention, that he’s just a really nice guy.

Dr. Abkin, and his office staff, make the entire journey as simple as possible. The office staff is always ready to answer your questions or help you over any of the hurdles that may come up along your journey. I was so well informed, pre-op, that I had little to no reservations about going through with the procedure. After my brief hospital stay, I had no worries about going home, because I knew, that Dr. Abkin and his staff would be there for me when I needed them. I am SO pleased with the entire process, that I’ve made an appointment for my Father, with Dr. Abkin, and my wife will be soon to follow. THANK YOU DR. Abkin, for saving my life.

I’m sorry this note took so long for me to write to you. I am grateful to you for being my doctor and coming to the rescue for me when I needed you so much. I am well aware of the unusual set of circumstances you encountered when you did my surgery in August. I know you wanted to close me up right away and not do the banding, but you went ahead knowing how important it was to me and you did a fantastic job. I can’t thank you enough. You have given me so much hope for the future.

It is also a pleasure to deal with your competent and helpful staff for all the many questions I had regarding appointments, insurance and support groups.

I would never hesitate to recommend you to someone looking for a bariatric surgeon. Thank you for being so good at what you do.

Wow… Thank You Dr. Abkin… I had my surgery 3 years ago and did great… but then I got “Comfortable” and wasn’t watching what I was eating. A friend had just had the surgery and asked me to come to Support Group with her.

I was surprised to see Dr. Abkin at the Support Group and it was great. He is so patient, is a good listener and knows what to say to get patients motivated. I was so happy to get that fire re-lit. I had not done my bloodwork and was reminded by him that they need to check on it yearly to make sure my vitamin levels are all in order. The moment I met Dr.Alexander Abkin, I knew I would be in the best of hands. Dr. Abkins honesty & enthusiasm in understanding me, gave me complete faith in going forth with the surgery. Having my Realize Band surgery on November 30th, I have lost 20 pounds & today’s date is 12/19/2010.

In preparation for the surgery,I had lost 10 pounds before the Realize Band was put in, getting my head ready for the life style change, which I so recommend. From beginning to end, the whole experience was delightful, and so well planned, by the entire staff. Dr. Abkins patience, to answer all my question, gave me the trust in him. This very important decision has made me so happy & relaxed about the whole dieting/eating thing. Taking the stress off food & being around it & having this tool has given me such willpower. So now at the age of 58 years old I’m, 30 pounds lighter, 2 sizes smaller & so much healthier, & in such a short time has shown how well it all can work, when following all directions. Also, I have eliminated 3 medications from my daily routine, now how great is that?? Success is in all of us, & Dr. Abkin can get you there. Sincerely, Donna

My surgeon, Dr. Abkin, did a fantastic job of preparing me for surgery, performing the procedure and in follow up care. The practice makes sure that you understand each step of the process and has someone there to help you meet every goal. The practice offers its own suite for doing adjustments, so you don’t have to go to the hospital for fills. They have responded quickly and positively to any question or concern that I have and have been patient. They offer online and in-person support groups, which is great for a working mother. I have recommended this group and Dr. Abkin to family members and friends, and recommend them to you as well!

My first impression of Dr Abkin was a great one and got better and better the more I got to know him. He went over options with me and gave me 100% input on everything. If I didn’t understand something, he made sure that by the end of my visit that I did. He has a gorgeous office in Florham Park, very close to Route 10. His entire office staff from front desk to billing, to the nurses are all very professional and very caring. The pre op treatment was fantastic; everything from the office visits to the classes and testing. There was no stone left unturned from the risks and benefits of the surgery. I had a wonderful expreience. I was very nervous the day of surgery and Dr Abkin came in, talked to me and made me feel very confident and comfortable with the physical and mental feelings that I was going through. After surgery, he went and spoke to my husband and calmed his nerves as well. He has offered support groups and he is not one to forget his patients after surgery. I just had my post op follow up visit today and am going to see him in a month as well. He talked me through the next 4 weeks and made sure I fully understood the steps I needed to take. I wish all of my experiences with Dr’s were as positive as this one. I would highly recommend Dr Abkin to anybody thinking about having bariatric surgery! I took my husband to the seminar just to hear what the doctors had to say about weight loss surgery. Dr. Abkin did such a nice job of explaining the surgery and what could be expected that I was shocked whne my husband signed up for a consult. He must have just clicked with Dr. abkin, but with that smile and personality how could you NOT?

I feel very safe with my husband in Dr. Abkin’s hands and the staff has be great with any questions we have. Thank You Dr Abkin!

I have just met Dr. Abkin at a seminar and he just seems to be the right fit for me! He was very informative, but easy to listen to and seemed to genuinely care about his patients and their choice to make the right decision for which surgery to choose!

His staff was also very helpful and I look forward to my weight loss journey with his group. See ya soon!

I first met Dr. Abkin at a weight loss surgery seminar on 6/24/10. I was very impressed by his knowledge, experience, and his personality. I made an appointment with him the next day. He was just as warm and friendly as he was at the seminar. He was very interested in my concerns and helped me make the decision to have gastric bypass surgery. He fully went over all risks and benefits and I felt confident in my decision once my meeting with him was over. I could tell from that first appointment that I made the right choice by picking him to do my surgery. The office staff is very nice and efficient, that same day I met with him, I also met with the scheduling department and left that day with a pre-op date, surgery date, post-op appointment date and a list of a few requirements I had to meet. Dr. Abkin was very reassuring when he saw me before I went into the operating room, I was very nervous as I had never had surgery. He was so kind to me and my husband before bringing me in. He checked on me each morning in the hospital with a smile on his face and encouraging words. The aftercare has been very good. I feel that Dr. Abkin genuinely cares about my success and health. He is a leader in his field and based on all my pre-surgery research and my amazing recovery, he is an extraordinary surgeon and his bedside manner is incredible. He is a very down to earth, caring doctor and I would recommend him (and have already) to anyone who is deciding to have weight loss surgery. I can’t say enough positive things about Dr. Abkin and my experience with his staff and my whole surgery experience, pre- and post-, it’s just been wonderful. Thank you Dr. Abkin!

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was that he was very professional, and very kind. He tempers his massive knowledge on the topic of WLS with an ease of understanding. He was supportive, yet encouraging of WLS in general.

I find his office staff to be knowledgable, though sometimes confused. They screwed up my post-op appointment not once, but twice. I have chalked that up to the new front-desk employee and just a matter of training. His office staff would never have swayed me from choosing him as my surgeon, even if they can be hard to work with. I also found it difficult to get a call back in a timely manner from the insurance department, but I made a nuisance of myself until my problems were solved.

Dr. Abkin has a wonderful bedside manner and is patient with questions both from family and from you as the patient. I went in with a list of questions at my first post-op appointment, and he answered them all gladly.

Overall I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin as your weight loss surgeon. My experience with him has been nothing but pleasurable.

Dr. Abkin, an angel from above. Dr. Abkin was my first choice in surgeons, as he operated on a friend of mine. Dr. Abkin and I also did a little interview for NBC news on August 2, 2010 on bariatric surgery being a cure for diabetes. During the short amount of times I spent with him, he answered any and all questions with truth and confidence. He explained from the first time you go to a seminar to the after care that is needed. He is superior in this field and I would recommend him to all.

Dr Abkin is a wonderful doctor. He is very knowledgeable, and friendly. His office staff is just the same. Instantly I felt very comfortable with both him and his staff, so I knew I had found the right doctor for my surgery. Still, I feel very comfortable with everyone. All my questions were always answered, my concerns were always addressed. Even at the hospital, with him I had an overwhelming sense of comfort. Overall, it was and still is a fantastic experience. I would recommend him to anyone.

I had a friend who had surgery five years before me and she used Dr. Abkin. He is very personable and caring. Dr. Abkin was very informative about the procedure includung the risks. The office is well organized which really minimized frustration. I would rate both surgical competence and bedside manner as great.

My husband had surgery with Dr. Abkin on August 2,2010. I couldn’t have asked for a better surgeon to handle such a serious life change for us! We knew from the moment we heard him speak at the seminar that he was the doctor for us because his confidence and passion was immediately recognized. He is so down to earth, attentive, understanding, and caring! You can feel that he genuinely wants what is best for his patients. He made sure that we understood everything, was clear of what to expect, and we were well informed. The education programs (pre-op) classes that are given by his group are a great resource and very informational! It’s comforting to know that they understand the importance of an informed patient.

I did have some issues with the office staff. It is difficult to get a straight answer from most of the staff members. Stephanie and Natalia were both great. Everything I needed I would call on Stephanie and she answered my questions even if it wasn’t part of her job responsibility. I can’t thank her enough for all of her help!

All in all, if you want a great surgeon with your best interest at heart…..See Dr. Abkin! My husband has had no problems, and he is doing great! The surgery could not have went better! Thank you for everything!

I met my surgeon at a Gastric Bypass Seminar. I was referred to him by my primary care physician and my cardiologist (he operated on my cardiologists daughter). Further research including talking to him and online research showed he had done thousands of Gastric Bypasses. His knowledge and experience impressed me. My successful surgery is proof. I was up and walking the night of the surgery. I was very pleased that the pain after surgery was minimal. The results show my confidence in him was deserved. His office staff, knew well how to deal with insurance companies (I hate them) and kept every stress free!

I highly recommend Dr. Abkin as would my wife and considering how much she dislikes doctors thats quite a reference.

Dr. Abkin is truly a gifted surgeon. He did my gastric bypass surgery through a single incision! Amazing! My surgery was done at St. Peter’s University Hospital,in New Brunswick, NJ, where I received excellent care. Dr. Abkin is pleasant, easy to talk to, and clearly answers all of my questions. His knowledgeable staff guides you through the process and promptly addresses your concerns. I am happily losing weight and feeling well. I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone considering bariatric surgery. You will be in good hands!

Just know that if you choose this dr he wil hold your hand from the first day you meet him. I just can’t say enought about Dr. Abkin. I would rate him a perfect 10. He advised me of all the pros and cons about lap band he made me realize that this is a tool and that I need to also work on me in terms of weight loss.

I just LOVR Dr. ABKIN

Doctor Abkin does a great job. I was referred to him by my Sleep Apnea doctor (Dr.Benton). I attended one of Dr. Abkin’s free monthly seminars to learn more about him and the different types of weight loss surgery available. I was happy to see the large chairs in his office. My first impression of Dr. Abkin was that he is compassionate, highly competent and easy to talk to. Bottom line is I think he is a very nice guy. Of course he is one of the top ranked surgeons in NJ but I wanted someone that I could feel comfortable turning my body over to. I have absolutely no regrets using Dr. Abkin.

His support staff were very helpful through the whole process. All the prerequisites to my surgery were explained and the insurance coordinator was invaluable

All risk associated with my surgery were fully explained. I took an online course describing everything that could happen. In addition the high level information was presented in both the free seminar and the pre-op class that I attended.

I have a structured aftercare diet program consisting of 4 phases (from clear liquids to my lifelong program). It takes about 4-6 weeks post surgery to get to phase 4.

Dr. Abkin is great for both competence and bedside manner. I am very thankful that he is my doctor. I would recommend him to anyone looking into weight loss surgery.

Dr. Abikin was extremely professional, caring, and personable. I appreciated his presentation at the introductory seminar and I knew I wanted him to do my operation.

He and his entire staff are compassionate, understanding, professional, and extremely efficient.

The required computer tutorial was extremely informative about the risks of surgery. Dr. Abkin was also direct and realistic about risks. However, he also correctly pointed out that risks at surgery are relatively small and manageable. Risks of remaining obese are much more “clear and present” and any patient worried about surgical risks should consider the risk of doing nothing and continuing to be morbidly obese.

The approach to surgery and the follow-up is very well thought out, and is meant to keep you on the right path. I know other people who have had gastric bypasses or bands and they have not had anywhere near the support and guidance that Dr. Abkin and his staff give.

With Dr. Abkin’s office, you have a pre-surgical seminar, you have a pre-surgical nutritional seminar, and you have follow-up office visits with bloodwork that checks your nutrition. The care is well-thought out and extremely helpful.

I have no complaints or reservations about recommending Dr. Abkin to anyone considering gastric bypass surgery.

The surgery is life-changing. Dr. Abkin and his staff gave me back my life. I will be forever grateful.

I first met Dr. Abkin some three years ago when I attended a seminar with my neighbor. My first impression — this guy is confident and straightforward. He’s approachable. I didn’t pursue surgery back in 2004 as my insurance did not cover it. Fast forward to 2008….new insurance company covered WLS but I had to go in network with in network surgeon. My lucky day.. Dr. Abkin was in network.

It’s a busy practice,

update 6/2010 He’s a great surgeon, but at 2 years out, it’s clear to me that he is only concerned about the surgical aspects of the journey. He didn’t really want to discuss non surgical issues (psych stuff) with me. He made sure I had appt with the psych but did not have much else to say.

I was very please with Dr Abkin on my first visit to explain the surgery process. He was very informative on what surgery he would recommend for me. I was also very please with the office staff in there pursuit of getting all the certifications needed for the insurance companies to approve the surgery. I am very please with Dr Abkin, he is a very nice and understanding and does ignore any questioned I have had before and after my surgery. I had heard from other people that he did not have a good bedside manner, but I did not find that to be true. I had more of a problem with a few of the nurses at Morristown Memorial Hospital,Especially the night shift which were not attentive to my needs. They would take an extremely long time to answer the help buzzer when used and some would ignore the IV Bags that needed to be changed. But Dr Abkin was a dream. As of to date I have lost over 50 lbs in less than 2 months. My last visit to see Dr Abkin was very exciting. He was extremely pleased with my progress and encouraged me to keep up the good work. I look forward to my next visit with him. I am extremely grateful to him for his excellent care and expertise. I would not have felt so comfortable with any other doctor. He made me feel very at ease during the whole surgery process. Dr Abkin is an Angel of God to be blessed with the knowledge and the delicate hands to help people in need. He gave me a new lease on life and I am truly thankful!!!! God Bless you Dr Abkin!!!!! I hope everyone has a great experience as I did.

Dr. Abkin and his staff are very knowledgeable in weight loss surgery. Dr. Abkin spent a lot of time during my first visit going over which procedure would be best for me. When I left I felt I had enough information, if not more, to make a good choice. I am now going for my one month post-op appointment and am very happy with results so far, I can wear my engagement ring again, YEAH!!! The pre-op class was very good and I was fully prepared for my surgery day and every day thereafter. There were no surprises. I give them an A+.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Abkin’s for just over 3 years now and I highly recommend him to anyone considering bariatric surgery. I originally was banded in 2007 and although the lapband did not end up working for me in the long run, Dr. Abkin worked diligently with me to find a solution to stop my port from flipping. We ultimately made the decision to remove the lapband after 2 failed port revisions and I converted to the gastric bypass in May of 2010. My decision to continue seeing Dr. Abkin for the bypass surgery came from my total confidence in his surgical skills and his commitment and dedication to his patients. I wouldn’t have even considered seeing another surgeon and I’m very happy with the decisions we made together in my weight loss journey. Dr. Abkin’s staff has also been extremely helpful and kind through this entire process and I strong recommend him to any person considering weight loss surgery.

I just want to Thank Doctor Abkin and everyone at his office for helping me to get on the Right Track for my weight loss journey! I thought it would take so long to jump through all those hoops the Insurance Company makes us go through. But before I knew it… I was ready to go and my surgery date was fast approaching.

Stephanie did a great job getting my Insurance Authorization and I look forward to seeing everyone when I go in for my post op visits. Their office is more like a new family for me!

Dr. Abkin is such a great Doctor… He really cares about his patients and doesn’t rush me. He’s patient with me and answered any question I had during the preparation for my surgery.

It’s been 3 months since my surgery … I’ve dropped over 60 pounds and will be putting on a bathing suit for the first time in 10 years!

Thank You SO MUCH for helping me get back to LIVING my LIFE!

UPDATE 5/31/2010:

After 12 weeks I have lost a total of 76lbs! (321 down to 245).

I haven’t felt this good in 20 years when I was 22 years old, honestly.

1 additional update on a piece of the negative feedback: Dr. Abkin read my feedback prior to my first return visit after surgery. We spoke after my visit on the repetitive nature of the data he collects during office visits. The doctor was as frustrated by it as I was! The reason for the repetition is the fact that he has committed to having an accredited office and, as such, is required to have multiple forms for the same data. he also said that he has been working for over a year on an electronic input system so he only needs to worry about the data input once.

Just the fact that he read and addressed the feedback I left him shows what kind of a person he is; he is very dedicated to the patients and it shows.

POSITIVE:

Dr. Abkin was referred to me by a friend who had the surgery a year prior to me. During this year I had spoken with 4 other surgeons and Dr. Abkin, by far, is the most professional and curtious of them.

His attention to my concerns surpassed my expectations as I was expecting like a revolving door type atmosphere when dealing with him.

10 days after surgery my incisions were excellent and healing well. I had to have a drain tube for my stomach cavity in for the week and now that too is healing nicely as well, after removal.

10 days in and I have lost 25 pounds (321 to 296)!!

NEGATIVE:

His office staff were unpersonable. This is important to people who have the stigma associated with obesity. Also, the repetitive multiple questionaire’s frustrated the hell out of me…every time I went to the office. The office should work on a single input system for the office so repetitive questions are eliminated.

The only other negative’s about the experience has to do with the insurance company and its requirements but that is a story for another website.

Good luck to everyone and thank you Dr. Abkin!

I’d like to give credit where Credit is Due! That would be Dr. Abkin for helping me turn my life around! He is a great doctor and when i first met him at seminar i knew he was the guy for me. He seemed very kind and easy to talk to and seemed to actually care about his patients.

I was in for my followup today and everything was fine other than a couple small vitamin levels which we’ll get under control. Sure outweighs the reports I used to get from my doctors! and this doc laughs and smiles which is cool.

Thank You Dr. Abkin and your whole staff for beig there for us and helping us!

I first Met Dr. Abkin almost 3 years ago. Thanks to him my life has really change! Not only have I been able to loose the excess weight… but I’ve gain my health back along with my Self Confidence and my ability to get up and do things! Thank You Doctor Abkin. I recently came in to see him for my annual visit. I’m impressed that they care enough after the surgery is healed that they actually want us to continue to come in and see them and have our blood work done annually. Makes sense… but i give his office credit for making sure we do so. They say its important to check our vitamin levels after having the Bypass Surgery and make sure that we are taking our Supplements. I try to do the best I can do so that… but knowing that my doctor is really going to check helps to keep me honest!

Dr. Abkin tells you like it is…. so I get a good laugh when I see him. He’s easy to talk to and remembers “EVERYTHING”. I’d like to thank him for giving me back my health and my Life!

Dr. Abkin and his staff were some of the most professional, caring, helpful, and competent medical professionals that I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. From the staff’s ability to guide me through the precertification process to Dr. Abkin’s extraordinary surgical skills, it was a great and virtually pain-free experience. I have already lost 20 lbs, three weeks since my surgery and I know with Dr. Abkin’s support, I will continue to progress to my ideal weight.

I had gastric bypass surgery on April 12th and could not be happier. I qualified for the single incision as opposed to the 5 and feel that my recovery and pain management was positive because of it. Dr. Abkin and his group in Florham Park, NJ are outstanding. The entire evaluation process, classes and pre and post surgery preparation/aftercare and follow up exceeded my expectations. I would rate Dr. Abkin a 5 out of 5 and would recommend his practice to anyone considering gastric bypass surgery. Grateful.

I just want to Thank Dr. Abkin and his Staff for everything they’ve done for me. Dr. Abkin is an awesome guy. I first Met Dr. Abkin over a year ago at a Seminar at St. Peter’s Hospital. I was very impressed with their seminar and their “Team Approach” to help the patients through this life change.

I first considered Bypass Surgery but then changed my mind and decided to get the Realize Band. My surgery was smooth sailing.. no problems and very little pain.

Initially I lost about 60 pounds, but then I started to gain weight. After my annual followup with Dr. Abkin I was able to refocus myself.

This is just a tool and we still need to put the right foods in there. Now I’m refocused on myself and I’m already down another 10 pounds. Thanks to Dr. Abkin and his staff for all their encouragment and support.

The support groups are there to keep us focused and now that i’m back to basics that tool is working all over again!

I would like to thank Dr. Abkin and his staff for putting up with me and helping me through my weight loss journey! I first met Dr. Abkin at Bayone Medical Center.

My initial consultation with Dr. Abkin was less than 2 months ago. He is very knowledgeable and answered every question i had prepared for him. We both agreed that Lap Band Surgery was the best choice for me.

His Insurance specialist was awesome. I was able to get my consultations scheduled and done very quickly and thanks to Dr. Abkin’s staff i was scheduled for surgery within one month. I can’t believe how efficient his staff is!

My surgery was on April 14, 2010 at st. Peter’s Hospital. Dr. Abkin has a great bedside manner, and was friendly, caring and confident on the day of my surgery. He was there after surgery to answer any questions or concerns I may have had.

I am now 2 weeks out from surgery and feeling great! I have already lost 10 pounds. Recovery was easy and discomfort was minimal. I am very thankful for having the pleasure of meeting Dr. Abkin and having the assistance of his staff to get me started on my new life! The seminar was very information and discussed the risks and benefits of the different weight loss procedures. after the seminar i Knew the REALIZE BAND was right for me.

My initial consult with Dr. Abkin was in Feb. of 2010. He is very knowledgeable and answered all my questions without making me feel rushed. His Surgical competence was very impressive! He genuinely cares about his patients.

I met with their insurance specialist after my consult, who was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what my insurance company would be looking for to get this approved. I was approved and scheduled for surgery within 1 month of meeting with him. I can’t believe how efficient his staff is!

I finally had my surgery in April of 2010 at St. Peter’s Hospital. Dr. Abkin has a great bedside manner and was friendly, caring and confident on the day of my surgery.

I had such a great experience with Dr. Abkin! The first time I met him was at my initial office visit. He really took the time to discuss my options with me and he answered all my questions. Trust me, I brought a list with me! I was so scared about having the surgery. I have three children and I really feared I would die on the table. He told me all the risks and I think he even pointed out the risks I would have if I didn’t do something about my weight. He never made me feel like he was rushed for time and he really seemed to care for me as an individual. My impression of him has not changed. He still takes time with me and never rushes through my office visits. He answers all my questions and he shares in the joy of my success! I had the gastric bypass surgery 14 months ago. Since then I have lost 134 pounds! I even brought in my before picture to show him and he told me he remembered what I looked like before. That really impressed me! I have been faithful with my follow up visits as well. I saw Dr. Abkin for the first visit and then for the next two I saw someone else. I forget her title. She was nice and helpful but I really wished I could have seen Dr. Abkin for every visit. You kind of build a connection with your surgeon. The office staff is nice and helpful for the most part. My only complaint there was that one time I called them to see if I could take a certain over the counter medication and they told me to call my primary care doctor. The problem is my primary care doctor does not always know what I am able to take so that was a little frustrating. I know there are support groups that meet once a month. I have not been to these meetings because I live 30+ minutes away from where they are available. I’m sure there are support groups in my area but I have not sought one out. My family and friends have been highly supportive and I have been very lucky in that aspect. I have had no problems since surgery. I have done my part with following the new way of eating and getting exercise. Dr. Abkin does stress aftercare and making sure you are following the program. I felt very confident having Dr. Abkin as my surgeon. If you are ready for surgery and ready to do your part Dr. Abkin will give you the tool to help make you successful! I thanked him for giving me my life back! He thanked me for letting him be a part of my journey! My personal experience has been wonderful!

I would like to thank Dr. Abkin and his staff for helping me through my weight loss journey. I had Surgery in Jan. and had some issues with band being to tight. Dr. Abkin was great and did a revision in March 11,09. I’m so happy I Pressed on… so far I’m doing great. It’s been 4 weeks I’m down 35 pounds and enjoying my NEW LIFE!

I first met Dr. Abkin at a new patient seminar in July of 2009. The seminar was very informative and discussed the risks and benefits of different weight loss procedures in great detail. After learning of my options, I knew Lap Band was the right procedure for me. After the seminar, I was able to schedule my behavioral, nutritional, and initial consultations. It was very convenient, and they practically held my hand from the very start!

My initial consultation with Dr. Abkin was on 07/25/09. I am so happy I found him. He is very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions without making me feel rushed. His surgical competence was very impressive! He genuinely cares about my concerns and my health. After discussing my options, he was very honest with what to expect after surgery. He did not seem to try and “sell me” with one procedure or the other, instead he really wanted me to make an informed decision so I can be successful after surgery. We both agreed that Lap Band surgery was the best choice for me.

I met with the insurance specialist after my consult, who was also very knowledgeable and knew exactly what was needed to get authorization for my surgery from my insurance company. They told me that I didn’t have to do anything, and they would obtain all of the necessary information from my primary care physician. I can’t believe how efficient his staff is!

Thank you Dr. Abkin and everyone in your staff for helping me through my journey so far. I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone considering weight loss surgery. as his practice is hands down the best in New Jersey!

Carriesun

Dr.Abkin was actually the second doctor I went with.My insurance initially sent me to a closer doctor but midway through the process, my employer changed companies and I had to start the process over again.

At first, I was not happy about being told I had to go to a seminar before meeting with Dr.Abkin because I had already started this process and “knew it all.” Well-it truly ended up being worthwhile. The doctors from his practice spoke, their insurance specialist discussed the different policies, and they had patients giving testimonial from different stages of the experience (the good, the bad, and the challenging- no sugarcoating).

At first, it was a bit overwhelming all the “requirement” hoop I had to jump through for my new insurance but Dr.Abkin’s practice is paired up with nutritionists, mental health practices, and had a team there to help streamline all those requirements. I really felt completely comfortable with Dr.Abkin- he was the first in NJ to work with the REALIZE band and ALL he does is bariatric surgeries- which really put me at ease. You are expected to go to classes to walk you through the process and they do offer free support groups.

My only concern was, initially, I did feel like the practice was a bit large and I was a number they were just rotating through… because of having to take the classes and the seminar. However, looking back I realized how else would they be able to educate me on life after surgery- and frankly – they could just band me and throw me out there to fend for myself. I changed my mind about the ‘herding the masses’ when the receptionist knew my name as soon as I walked in and on the day of my surgery Dr.Abkin and I discussed an issue with my insurance – he told me he would follow up. I was actually surprised that he not only followed up with my insurance, but my husband’s as well, even contacting my husband’s employer to find out about my secondary coverage. He personally looked into the issues and helped me to figure out a way to resolve it. Taking those extra steps proved he truly cared about my success even after the surgery. I seriously cannot rave enough about Dr.Abkin’s practice because not only was he wonderful, but so was his staff.

The BIG negative – which I fault the insurance – is the process can be cumbersome and at times overwhelming. You, as the patient, do have to stay on top of everything- which not my strength. .there were times I did panic about whether the insurance was going to cover it or not after all those hoops, but every challenge was so worth it. With my insurance, there were out-of-pocket expenses, but I was warned of them up front. It came out to about $400 so just be warned- make sure your doctor walks you through that. One woman I talked to did go after her insurance (specifically for the mental health requirement because that was almost $300- and she got the insurance to cover it. She told me if they require it, they should pay for it then…and hers did. I did not try. )

I am almost a month out and am already down 28 pounds! If you are considering Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons of Morris in New Jersey- you will really be pleased. Their support goes beyond the surgery- they have a strong network of people to help you with everyday life. I think the most important thing I learned was that the band is a tool, not a solution. They equip you with more than just one tool to help you flourishing in your new life! If you want to ask me more, please feel free to post to me  I am more than happy to help!

I would like to thank Dr. Abkin and his staff for helping me through my weight loss journey. I first met Dr. Abkin at a new patient seminar Dec. 12 2009 in Florham Park.

Abkin was on 02/11/10. We both agreed that Gastric Banding surgery was the best choice for me.

I met with Stephanie, the insurance specialist after my consult, who was also very knowledgeable and knew exactly what was needed to get pre authorization for my surgery from my insurance company. They told me that I didn’t have to do anything, and they would obtain all of the necessary information from my primary care physician. Like I said before, they held my hand the whole way and made this process very easy for me. I was approved and scheduled for surgery within 3 weeks of meeting him. I can’t believe how efficient his staff is! This was one of the best practices that I have been to.

I finally had my surgery on 3-16-10 at Florham Park Surgical Center. Dr. Abkin has a great bedside manner, and was friendly, caring, and confident on the day of my surgery. After surgery, he let me know everything went well, and asked if I had any questions or concerns for him. After answering my questions, he told me to follow up in his office in 3 week(s) for a checkup.

I am now 3 weeks out from surgery and I am feeling great! I had my post op appointment and I am down 16 lbs. My recovery was very fast, and the pain was minimal. Nothing like I expected. Thank you Dr.Abkin and everyone in your staff for helping me through my journey so far. I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone considering weight loss surgery. as his practice is hands down the best in New Jersey!

I went to two other surgeons before I found Dr. Abkin and I am so glad that I did!! I had done my research knew what I wanted and I was there and I felt like those 1st two surgeons just bipassed my questions and really left me feeling unconfortable and demotivated.

After my initial meeting with Dr. Abkin I knew he was the surgeon for me. He asked the right questions, listened to my questions and between him and staff made me feel confortable and well prepared for the surgery.

I had done all pretesting with the other surgeon so I was able to quickly schedule my surgery. Everything went beautifully. So much that I was back at work within a week’s time (I have an easy office job, very close to home). I’m ready for my 1st adjustment now and I am confident in my progress and frankly I think its all due to finding the surgeon and team.

Dr. Abkin, Dr. Bertha and all of his staff are in my opinion the best and I am glad to have found them.

Dr. Abkin was very friendly the first time I met him. He even made me laugh a little. After I had my surgery I went for my 2 week check up and had lost a good chunk of weight. He asked me if i was” Trying to break the record.” This made me smile cause I was trying extra hard to keep up the work and it was hard but this boosted my confidence and at that point I knew that “I can do this!” The staff is very friendly and very organized. I never had to wait more than 20 minutes for them to call my name in the waiting room. Dr. Abkin is truly one that is able to help those who are overweight and make them feel good about themselves. There are so many tools you can use, support groups, online help, just being at the first seminar gave me the push to have bariatric surgery. Other peoples success stories at the seminar made me realize that I deserve to feel good and healthy. To rate Dr. Abkin and his staff from 1-10, I would have to give them a 10! They have seriously changed my life and I would like to thank them with all of my heart.

My first impression of DR. Abkin was that he wasn’t just there to do his job and go home. When you go to the hospital you tend to feel like just another chart and that you are in a assembly line. He was very friendly and talkative, laughs with you and sounds sincere.Hes got a good since of humor. He made me feel important. I got the feeling that he really loved his job and wanted to help people. He was very informative during the first visit. The day of surgery he answered all my question didn’t rush me and made me feel like there was nothing to worry about.Which was great because i was really nervous.I have no complaints about Dr Abkin and trust me if i don’t like a doctor i let everyone know! but he was great and i definitely recommend meeting with him. As for the Staff they are wonderful. The receptionist are so nice and patient even when there really really busy and the phones are going crazy, they still take the time to listen to what you have to say and i love that. The nurses are nice, pretty much everyone that i met with is great, i haven’t had 1 bad experience with anyone there.Being big and taking this step is very difficult. When im out in public i know people look laugh and snicker behind my back, but not this place they make you feel like family. So i have no doubts in my mind that you will be completely satisfied with Dr Abkin and his team.. THANKS SO MUCH DR ABKIN AND YOUR STAFF,you have made this transition for me a GOOD one!!

When I first met Dr. Abkin at a seminar in St. Peter’s Hospital – he approached my daughter and myself. We were there looking for a solution to her weight problem. After speaking with him I thought about how much it would help me to lose weight too! Being a person who never puts them self first, I realized it was about time I took care of ME so I would be able to take care of everyone else in my life. Dr. Abkin’s office made the going through the process of getting approved for surgery almost effortless! He has a great support team that is always willing and able to help anyone. After getting approved for surgery for myself (insurance would not cover my daughter due to her age), I chose to have a Realize Band put in. Surgery was on March 17, 2009 and couldn’t have gone smoother! I was in and out! The next day I woke up feeling wonderful and actually washed clothes and went grocery shopping and was back to work in 4 days! I was surprised by how quickly I started to lose weight. It was coming off slow and steady but then it was time for an adjustment; I was no longer losing weight. One of the Dr’s met me at the hospital and put in saline and like magic – my appetite disappeared once again! I was doing fine but then started having issues with vomiting. I called Dr. Abkin who showed great concern and met me at St. Claires Hospital. He wasn’t quite sure what was going on but took care of me and sent me to a Gastro to be scoped. Fortunately everything was fine! A few weeks later we slowly started adding the saline in. Then in January of this year more was added. At first everything was fine then the vomiting started. Dr. Abkin did not wait any time to get me back in to his office. Later in the day he checked me and told me my band had slipped! ARGH! He then gave me a few options – all of which included band removal. Dr. Abkin was very thorough in his explanations and truly sincere in his wish for helping me attain good health and weight. I went home horrified at the thought of regaining weight! After a few days of soul searching, I called Dr. Abkin’s office with my answer – I wanted the band removal and RNY surgery. Dr. Abkin’s office once again went to bat for me and got my surgery approved almost immediately! It was AMAZING!!! I went to pre-surgical class on March 3 and had surgery on March 8. On March 8, Dr. Abkin met me in pre-op with his wonderful sense of humor and sincerity intact! He sat with me discussing things and asking if I had any questions. It was very comforting to have him talking to me like a friend before surgery. When I woke up from surgery – the first thing I wanted to do was get up and walk as I knew it would be best for me. The hospital got me up and moving and took great care of me. I was a bit(ok..more than a bit) more sore than Realize Band Surgery but was ready for it! Dr. Abkin made sure the hospital had all the pain meds I needed on board and it wasn’t as bad as I had expected. For those who want to know – the internal stuff doesn’t hurt – only the incision and muscle cut spots!!! Today I went for my 1 week follow-up and have lost 11 lbs in a bit over a week! Dr. Abkin and his staff were once again in great moods and very supportive; they do their best to make you comfortable. Dr. Abkin spent time with me discussing how I was feeling and making sure everything was fine. Thanks so much to Dr. Abkin for giving me another chance to live my life healthy!!!!!

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was that he was very informative, knowledgable and compationate about how I felt with my weight and the struggles that I have had to acheive any success. I felt very comfortable and not at all nervous with having him perform my sugery. It is very important that a patient feel comfortable and confident in his or her surgeon. The office staff was very friendly and knew what they were doing and took care of you in a timely fashion. They have an excellent program and give you all the support you need taking you from the beginning of your journey to the end and it does not stop there. Support groups meet every month to help you achieve your goals and for you to share your experience with others. They hold classes for anyone who is interested in weight loss surgeryhaving first a dietician come in annd meet with you to go over exactly how to eat in each phase after your sugery. This was very informative to me. After the dietician speaks with you the nurse willcome in to go over the entire procedure and the risks of surgery were addressed in a detailed manner from the beginning of the day you arrive for surgery to what to expect when you get home. Then Dr.Abkin comes in to speak with you to address any concerns you may have. It was explained really well leaving you with all the information you need to know. I would rate Dr. Abkin with a 100. He has great bedside manner, cares about each of his patients and never rushes you out of the office. He is there to listen and is a highly surgically competent doctor. I would recommend anyone to Dr. Abkin to undergo bariatric surgery he is the best suregeon I have ever met.

Dr. Abkin was my surgeon for single incision laparoscopic banding. I was only mildly uncomfortable after surgery and up walking the dog the next day. Two months later I barely have a scar. He’s been great through the entire process. He has a wonderful combination of competence and bedside manner. The office staff is nice but busy. The worst part of the process was dealing with insurance issues. I’ve lost 25 pounds in 2 months and it’s been a comfortable journey so far.

I had heard of the lap band from TV but it was my experience with a previous patient of Dr. Abkins that pushed me forward in the process. I chose Dr. Abkin based on his experience and his reputation. I was not disappointed. When I first met with him he was very informative about the operation and answered all of my questions. When I was finally in the hospital ready to have the surgery I found myself actually crying on the operating table, scared I had never had surgery before. Dr. Abkin saw the tears and completely comforted me and put my mind at ease. He then also remembered that when I went for my follow up. He is very positive and encouraging. I had the surgery on Jan. 22, 2010 and I have already lost 22Lbs. and I feel great! If you are considering weight loss surgery he is the one to turn to. Thank you Dr. Abkin, I look forward to contining on my trail to better health.

I used to be very active and even though I was aging had still been able to participates in organized sports. Last summer my health prevented my from playing softball, which is something I had enjoyed for so many years. I knew something needed to be done to get my health under control.

I recently had weight loss surgery and wish I had it done sooner. Dr. Abkin at Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons (ALS) performed my surgery and I could not have been more pleased. Over the 6 month journey in preparation of my surgery date, the staff at ALS was very helpful and always very pleasant. They truly made sure I was prepared for the surgery and the life style changes necessary for post surgery to be successful. I have not had any complications thus far and do not anticipate any in the future. I would recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone looking into Bariatric Surgery.

I started my journey in bariatric surgery one year after a close relalative had gastric bypass and I witnessed her success. During that year I started to realize many of the life experiences and joys obesity was keeping from me. I had a consultation with my relative’s surgeon and started the process when I found out that he was not in my network. I asked him, if he were me, who would he choose as his surgeon. That surgeon recommended Dr Abkin. When I met Dr Abkin at a seminar, I found him to be very sensitive to my needs and concerns. He also wanted to be sure of my committment to follow through with the choice I was making regarding not only the surgery, but the changes I had to make before, during the period after the surgery, and for the long term. He thoroughly explained all the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery to me in a very basic and understandable manner. I chose to have the gastric bypass surgery and it was clear to me that Dr Abkin and his staff were going to be part of this journey for the long run. They made every effort to support me in this effort from day one until today. Dr Abkin and his staff really care about the success of their patients and I don’t mean they just are happy for us. You can see in Dr Abkins eyes and expression that he gets personal satisfaction out of his patients’ success. This effort is collaborative. The surgery is a tool and success depends on the effort of the team. That includes real patient participation. Dr Abkin and his staff, as well as the support system associated with the practice, gives us all the support and knowledge that we need to succeed, but its up to the patient to make the most of it. I wont say its a magic bullet or that its easy. But all the extra difficulty, the psychological, emotional and physiological baggage is minimized giving us a real fighting chance to make the goal. rnAs far as the surgery goes, it was the easiest part. Dr Abkin did an excellent job in that I had no complications and a speedy recovery. I had some pain for about three days. By day four I was walking in the mall with my wife, taking it easy but trying to get mobile as soon as I could. Pain was now minimal and I was able to function relatively well. By three to four weeks, I was almost 100%. I had no food cravings and got through the initial dietary process (first liquids, then very soft food, then soft food etc) without issue. The bariatric unit at St Clare’s Hospital was excellent and Dr Iannacci, Dr Bertha and Dr Abkin all were excellent with me post op. I was back to work in 2 weeks (please understand, I do not do strenuous work and your experience may be different). I had some post op spitting up (not vomiting) from eating too fast. Maybe 5 episodes in a year. But, it part of the learning curve and retraining yourself to eat slowly. A price well worth paying for the cahnges I have gone through. Now, one year later, I have lost 135 lbs. I practice martial arts. I have completed combat fitness programs and I am lean and mean but most importantly, I am healthy, I am no longer diabetic and I feel great! I am probably an exceptional case, maybe I was lucky. I had relatively no problems with the surgery, recovery and progress up to now. I really believe that success is possible for anyone willing to stay with the program.

I had the gastric bypass surgery on Nov 23rd of last year. Let’s just say I couldn’t have picked a better surgeon. It toke me YEARS to finally decide to go thru with the surgery. I researched and attended seminars with Dr. Abkin. I always knew if I decided to have the surgery that he would be the one to preform it hands down! Dr. Abkin performed the gastric bypass differently. I only had 1 incision that was about 2 inches long right about my belly button oppose to 5 incisions. He called this new procedure Single Incision Laparoccopic Surgery. Dr. Abkin is the first surgeon to perform this new way of gastric bypass surgery on the East coast. And I was his 3rd patient using this new procedure. Thru my research, I anticipated on being in a lot of pain after the surgery. I was in paid during my 2 day stay at the hosptial and the nursing staff at Morristown Memorial Hospital was EXCELLENT in helping me to manage my pain. I was sent home with pain meds and only had to take 1 pill the first day home just to prevent the onset of pain. I didn’t have to take the pain meds again! My second day home, I felt GREAT. I wasn’t in ANY pain, just a little gas (which is to be expected). I wasn’t tired or weak. I even got up and did VERY light household chores. I had people waiting on me hand and foot for no reason because I could take care of my personal needs myself. I’m almost 2 months post op with no complications! This new procedure allows you to heal quicker to return back to your normal life in a shorter period of time. All thanks goes to Dr. Abkin!

Dr Abkin and his staff are wonderful!. They are very caring and patient. They take the time to make you feel like a friend, rather than just a name on the patient list.rnI had my gastric bypass surgery at St.Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. The staff there are wonderful. They were very caring and attentive.rnI would also like to add that the surgeon was able to do the rny procedure in just three incisions. I have one incision above my navel, and one on each side below my ribs. It is a new technique where the doctor makes the incision above the navel and if there is enough room in the body, he can do the procedure from the one incision. It results in quicker healing and less chance of complications.rnI would highly reccomand Dr. Abkin and his staff if anyone is considering this surgery!

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was that he was nice, relaxed, patient, very informative and knowledgeable. He explained everything about the risks and benefits from beginning to end in detail. He has been encouraging with me, before and after my surgery. Knowing that he was one of the first surgeons to perform all the different weightloss surgeries, made me feel relaxed and confident that I chose the right doctor. I can’t praise him enough for doing such a wonderful job.rnrnDr. Abkin’s office staff have been great since my first visit with them. They take time to answer all your questions, help you out if anything is needed and work hard to get everything processed quickly. They are all very personable.rnrnI do now and will always continue to recommend and praise Dr. Abkin. I trust him 100% and I am so happy that I did this surgery with Dr. Abkin. I honestly can’t find one negative thing to say about Dr. Abkin, his staff or the surgery itself.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say Thank You to Dr. Abkin for being great at what he does, He was supportive and very heartwarming, at my 1 week appointment he noticed how excited I was for my new journey and he was truly happy for me. Dr. Abkin gave me hope when I felt there was none. His office staff is fantastic. Stephanie took the time and worked with me and my insurance to get everything together for my approval and my approval came through pretty quickly. She was just as excited for me as I was for the new adventure I was about to take on. The surgical procedure was a couple of hours and I was in recovery and the staff at Morristown Hospital made me feel like I was truly their only patient. I had the best experience with Dr. Abkin and his entire team and I really want him to know from the bottom of my heart how thankful I am. Thank you very much, Dr. Abkin.

I guess divine intervention led me to Dr. Abkin. I way on my way with another surgeon when I found out that insurance would cover 0% because he was out of network.

I did my research on ObesityHelp and other forums and found Advanced Laporoscopic Surgeon’s. Reading one review made me choose Dr. Abkin – a reader said she saw god in his eyes. That had a profound affect on me.

After seeing Dr’s Bertha and Iannace for follow-ups in the hospital I now know that any of them would be an excellent choice for a surgeon. These doctors work as a team during the operation and it works out great.

Dr. Abkin is very professional and very smart. He has a very nice disposition and listens well to you. He’s concerned about your needs and addresses all of them.

He explained all the risks / benefits of the surgery to me. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both great.

I would rate him a 10 out of 10.

If I had to do all this over again I would and I would choose Dr. Abkin again.

I am almost 2 month post op now and have had only 1 glitch, which was a small leak from one incision about 2 weeks post op. That was quickly addressed and just a faded memory already. I have lost 53 lbs since surgery in 56 days. What can be better than that!

I am now walking daily 45-60 minutes or more and am starting strength training tonight.

God bless Dr. Abkin along with doctors Bertha and Iannance.

As I got to know Dr. Abkin I found him to be very interested in his patient and their success. I felt that Dr. Abkin and I were in this together and I wasn’t alone. He is easy to speak to and has a nice sense of humor. He stresses after-care and going to the support groups. He is not only a very competent surgeon but a great person.rnrnHis office staff are courteous, frindly, and professional. Stephanie efficently makes appointment and goes out to make sure patients receive timely appointments. rnrnCarol is very direct and matter of fact, however, I am glad to have her on my side when it comes to getting any kind of medical insurance problems settled in a positive manner,

The first thing I want to say is, thank you God – and thank you Dr. Abkin. I finally got past the fear, and my gastric bypass was done on August 10, 2009. Dr. Abkin is a skilled and an amazing surgeon, very kind, and never rushing you through an office visit. In fact, I just got back from my post-op visit to get my stitches out. I am feeling physically and emotionally GREAT, and looking forward to the support group his office offers. I dont know why, but I thought there would be so many post-op side effects, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, tiredness. But, NOTHING. Of course, it helps when you follow the instructions! If it weren’t for my knee problems, I swear I would be doing laps around the block. I just don’t know how to thank him, he has saved my life and given me this opportunity for successful weight loss and a new lease on life.

I was 24 years old when I was told that I may not ever be able to have children if I don’t lose weight. That was the last straw and I just had to make a change in my life. Before that I pretended that I didn’t like roller coasters because I knew the seat belt wouldn’t fit on me. I was just miserable and I was embarrassed to participate in activities that I loved because I didn’t want people to judge me. I was just sick of being made fun of and I wanted to be able to jog down the beach with my friends and feel comfortable in a bathing suite while at the beach or pool. rnrnI had tried every diet I could find but it was a viscous cycle and anytime I lost weight I would end up gaining it again. rnrnDr. Abkin helped me through the whole process and he was patient with me while I asked him a million questions. He was great with my family and there right after my surgery. I would highly recommend him and his office to anyone considering weight loss surgery. rnrnI was 290lbs at my heaviest and now I’m 155lbs. I’m almost half the size that I was and I finally feel healthy and good about my self. I’m currently training to be in a triathlon and I love going to the beach and pool now and finally feel comfortable wearing a bathing suit. rnrnOf course it’s more than just getting the surgery. I still log my food and am always on top of my vitamins. I exercise regularly and control my portions the way I was trained to do. rnrnTake a look at my before and after picture. rnrn-Jackiern

I met with Dr. Abkin for the first time in early August. He will be my surgeon. If you look in his eyes, I swear you can see a bit of heaven. The man is a gift from the gods. He is exactly where he is supposed to be on this earth, guiding people and \”fixing it\” , as surgeons do. My surgery date is January 27th. Approved after first letter to Oxford Ins. My surgery was a success, I have had no complications to date, other than my own head getting in the way on occasion. Dr. Abkin is an Angel. He makes you feel as tho your not on this journey alone. rnrnIt is now almost 6 months later and I am down 37lbs! I think the most amazing part of this journey is that I \”feel\” wonderful. Dr. Abkin has been there for me every step of the way, even when I have the silliest of questions or concerns.rnrnI’m going to continue on this journey.

Dr. Abkin is a wonderful surgeon. My first impression was \”here’s a top-notch doctor\”. rnDr. Abkin was my husband’surgeon for the lap-band procedure and he is a success story having lost 107 lbs. thus far. I, therefore, wanted only the best…Dr. Abkin.rnThere was a slight ‘glitch’ w/scheduling my appointments due to a very similar name to mine in their files & this was efficiently corrected. Jessica G. is an EXPERT on the subject of insurance and it was a pleasure working w/ her. The medical staff is highly educated, warm, sincerely caring. A+rnThere is nothing I dislike about Dr. Abkin!rnHis aftercare program is great and should definitely be followed for your own benefit.I have RA and one of the follow-up programs was a specifically designed exercise regimen I can handle @ home. Excellent! Bravo, Kingley Institute!rnBetween the seminar, the initial sessions w/ the staff, Dr. Abkin’s own genuine concern…you will not be uninformed in any way! My husband and I rate Dr. Abkin at the highest possible score. His surgical competence, bedside manner and his dedication for helping his patients is clearly evident. I have HIGHLY recommended him to the people I care about with serious health conditions and obesity.

Let me first say that if you had mentioned Gastric By-pass surgery to me in late 2008, I would have laughed at you. I am a 48 year old male who was 311 lbs. and has had sugar diabetes for 18+ years.I went to a seminar at St. Peters hospital in January 2009. Dr. Abkin was there and spoke that night. I immediately knew this guy knew what he was talking about and he seemed like someone who would take a personal interest in each individual person. I was right on. I had gastric by-pass surgery on June 9,2009. There was a small complication and when I awoke he made me fully aware of the issue and assured me that if there were any further complications he had a plan to correct the issue. As of today, July 11,2009, I have not had any complications. No dumping, no throwing up, …….nothing. The weight is coming off and I feel like a new person. And guess what??? Absolutely no diabetic medicine since the day of surgery. Completely cured! During my followup visits Dr. Abkin always takes plenty of time to sit down and talk to you. He wants to know how you feel, how you are doing, and anything he can do for you. I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin and I feel you could not find a better surgeon.rnBlake FoshiernEast Windsor, NJ

I just wanted to thank Dr. Abkin and his entire office for everything they did for my sister. Thanks to the surgery she got a \”Tool\” that enabled her to get her health back. They are there for the whole process from helping you get approved for the surgery to going through it and they even offer support and help you through your weight loss journey. This is a great practice that is FULL SERVICE! They make you part of their family and treat you as family! Now we will have many more years to share with my sister! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Wow where to begin? Dr. Abkin is awesome. I knew when I was introduced to him at the New Patient Seminar I was going to love him. Then when I had my consult with him, I fell in love. He’s direct and to the point with a little fun side. He answered all my questions, didn’t rush me and added some humor as well.rnThe staff was wondeful, and a great extention of Dr. A. rnI’m completely confident that I’m in excellent hands with Dr. Abkin!!!

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was wonderful. I felt very comfortable with him and knew he was the surgeon for me.

I still feel very comfortable with him, but I am not as confident as I was before the surgery. My Realize Band surgery was October 20, 2008 and I’ve lost a total of 10 lbs. I’ve had my band tightened once and I am scheduled for another adjustment on April 20, 2009. I feel like the “taking it slow” method is not working for me. While I wanted the band tightened almost immediately, I could not get it tightened until the end of January (a little less than 3 months after the actual surgery).

As for his office staff, they are wonderful while you are in the office, but it is difficult to get an appointment because only one person can make appointments for adjustments and it took me 3 days to actual talk to her even though I was in the office and left several messages after I left the office.

I am still holding my overall opinion because I want to give this next adjustment a chance. I still feel comfortable with Dr. Abkin and I trust in the long run that his method of “taking it slow” will work out.

I was a bit insecure first meeting him– I chose him on reputation alone. I am an ICU nurse, but have never worked with him. (Nurses generally like to stick with who they know). My first office visit went well- I was anxious, of course- waiting to hear that I would not be appropriate for surgery. His office is very busy, however, the staff is great- from the desk to the NP’s. Jessica (she does insurance) was phenominal. Dr. Abkin wants to make sure that you really understand the procedure and process. Not only is there an orientation- that you can attend monthly and ask as many questions as you like, there is also a 3 hour preop class that is geared to your procedure and you review the paperwork specific to the hospital where you will have surgery. This is nice– the first time you see your discharge instructions is before surgery! He was attentive post op, very supportive and encouraging. He has monthy support groups at several hospitals- you could attend weekly….rnThank you Dr. Abkin!!

The whole procedure was new to me. I met with my primary doctor about the gastric bypass surgery in November 2008. My doctor told me that he will refer me to the best of the best. Dr. Alexander Abkin. When I met with Dr. Abkin he was open and honest about the procedure. After our meeting my date was scheduled and I was in the books for surgery. rnOn the day of the surgery, I was wheeled into the waiting area of the operating room. Dr. Abkin took time out, to come over to me, asked me how I was doing then asked me how my wife was doing (she had the procedure the week before!) Then, he asked me if I brought my CPAP machine. I was amazed that he would remember that. He told me everything was going to go fine. rnWhen in the OR, he was talking to me through the whole thing ill I was asleep. I must admit I was not even nervous knowing I was in the best hands. rnAfter the surgery, Dr. Abkin did his follow up making sure I was ok. Then he visited the following day! rnThere is no surprizes. He lets you know everything that is going to happen and what to expect.rnSo if you are looking into this procedure and looking for a doctor who takes personal interest in his patients then Dr. Abkin is the man for the job! I would totally recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone who is thinking of this procedure.

I am 5 years out from my gastric bypass. Thanks to Dr. Abkin I was able to greatly improve the quality of my life and health. I would not be able to live the life I lead now if it had not been for him. Dr. Abkin was supportive and informative from our first meeting. Though his office was busy, he always took time to answer any concerns I had. Fortunately, I never had even a minor complication and was able to be quite sucessful in losing about 120 lbs. The pre-op teaching and continued support/aftercare makes Dr. Abkin a good choice for a surgical procedure in my experience!

I knew just based on his seminar that he was the surgeon for me. First off, the seminar was very organized, most of my questions were answered without me uttering a word. When Dr. Abkin spoke, I knew he was the authority of his field. After the seminar, he sat with me for quite a while and answered all my questions, never making me feel like I was holding him up. rnrnMy main concern leading up to the surgery was the risk of complications during the procedure. Dr. Abkins and his team are very clear as to what complications could arise. The morning of the surgery, I managed to catch a glimpse of him walking around the pre-op room before he came to speak with me, he was so at ease, looking as if this was business as usual. I never worried again. This doesn’t mean he lacks bedside manner. He came in to speak with me before being led to the O. R, at that point, his kindness combined with confidence made me ready, and excited to begin my new adventure.rnrnI not only survived the surgery, but I have seemed to thrive. I think it helped knowing that my life was in the best of hands and I truly believe no one could have done this better. Even my after care has been great. He has designed a program (Fit for Life) that helps the patient adjust to the physical and mental changes ensuring a successful future.rnrnIf I had to offer any criticism, its that the office was a bit in transition, so the office staff was a little off when it came to returning calls, or keeping me informed with my health insurance status. Now that they have a beautiful new office, I’m sure that has tightened up.rnrnI really can’t say enough about him, I had never had surgery before, now he has set the bar as far as what I expect in a surgeon. He is the best in the business, kind, organized and driven to providing you with the best aftercare. Need I say more?rnrnrnrnrn

After 1 year, and 150 pound lost, what can I say but … DOCTOR ABKIN, AND ALS, GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK !! .. I can’t thank them enough … Quick synopsis: I researched gastric banding for 3 years before I decided to do it. In all my research, Dr. Abkin’s (and Bertha’s) names were always regarded very highly in the field. What I liked most about Dr. Abkin was his straight-forward honestly. He never talked me into one procedure or the other. He listened, and respected the surgery I wanted. I had my Realize band operation done on January 29th 2008, and was the best thing I ever did. I was back “to normal” within two days. I can truly say Doctor Abkin not only saved my life, but gave it back. .. And the folks at ALS are great too – plus I can’t tell you how many \”friends\” I made from ALS and the Support Groups. What other Medical team has the \”Program For Life\” program .. Notice it’s Program for LIFE .. These folks are in it for the long haul !! If you have any hesitation concerning Doctor Abkin, or ALS, DON’T !! Paraphrasing those Pizza box saying .. “You’re looked at the rest, now go to the BEST” !!

I have only met him once and my first impression was that he was cool and confident. I go for my first consultation on 1/22/09 and will post more at that time.

I have completed my consultation. I met him today and he was so personable with me. The staff was busy however they were respectful. Can’t say anything at this time about not liking him. He informed me and I am feeling him when he said if I do the aftercare, follow the way he is going to show me, I will have no risk. I have a pre-surgery class in about three weeks before surgery will post more about this. Over all at this time I put him at 8 even before the surgery. Just adding on to my OP. I have had some problems with loss paperwork that was sent to the office. This was frustrating and not professional to my other doctors. Just glad we are pass this and I am steadfast in what I need.

11/23/2008 I first met him and his staff at a Gastric Bypass seminar, It all sounded great,They were all helpful that night. I went to the office and the staff were just as great and knew what I needed. I did not have to wait long to see the doctor. The doctor was open to hear all my questions and ask me to write any down for my pre op class. So far he gets a 10…..

01/08/2009 I met the doctor and staff at the office. It was all great. I was nervous a bit but left there like wow I am ready. I was told we can do you next week. I started to cry some and said that i need more time and Feb 9 it will be. I was approved by Amerihealth in 5 days…

01/22/09 Last Thursday I had my Pre Op. It was great the staff did a great job going through things from nutrtion, pre admission, post surgery and questions were all answer. Then Dr Abkin came in and was there for our last min questions before our Big Day!

From the start I knew Dr. Abkin was a straight forward doctor. I liked that. He is genuinely caring about his patients. I recommended him to one of my girlfriends . She is having her surgery on the 21st of October. Dr. Bertha is also fantastic. He was on call my first weekend post surgery. We had to call him a few times and he was wonderful. I love the fact that they don’t do the surgery and send you off into the world alone. They stay with you, giving you excellent care and advice. I know with Dr. Abkin, he has my best interest at heart. I have heard stories about other doctors just letting there patients do and eat whatever they want. Not Dr. Abkin. And I trust him and his opinion. I think that is very important. I would recommend him to anyone who is having surgery. Wonderful….just wonderful!

Dr. Abkin was very excellent. He is very thorough, but also very quick. You won’t sit in the office waiting for hours on end. Everyone at the center is also very nice and helpful. I would overall rate him as high as possible. I am very happy with my surgery and how the weight loss is going so far. I honestly do not have anything bad to say about him. My parents were upset that he didn’t come out after surgery to discuss it, but I have not had any problems with him at all.

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was he was all business. However, as time went on, I found him to be most personable and caring. It is important to know, if one is looking for the BEST surgeon there is available in New Jersey, Dr. Abkin is the surgeon for you. I also must add, that I did have occasion to meet with doctor Bertha while I was in the hospital after my surgery. I must say, I never expected such a kind and caring doctor, especially, since we had never met me before that moment.rnrnI have very much hesitated to write this review because I want absolutely no one to be discourage about seeing doctor’s Abkin and Bertha. I will stress once again there are NO better surgeons for this type of surgery you will find in the state of New Jersey. Do your homework………check out their stats for yourself. I would highly recommend them and trust them with my own children. rnrn However, I must be truthful. The office staff I found to be young and many very inexperienced and extremely unprofessional with handling people. The office manager, I do not want to name, however her name begins with the letter (J), was so rude to me I almost ended up not having my surgery . She was not only rude, insensitive, she absolutely lacked even the least bit of caring or concern….. she was cold and downright mean and nasty. ( At one point she told me if I didn’t like her answers I should go elsewhere). I didn’t want to make any waves, I just wanted my surgery and she most surely made it an uphill battle. It was a true nightmare and all I wanted was to get well. It’s difficult or let me reword that……….nearly impossible to beat me down, but this office staff just about did. rnrnI did get to a point where I stopped \”pushing\” to get my case going and so did they…since I never got a call. It was exhausting, you had to keep calling and calling and begging and pleading…… I was done……finished…..It wasn’t until my husband picked up the pieces and help me get back on the right track to get my surgery off the ground. Which meant to call and call and call and push and push and pull. OMG! I don’t think I would do it again.rnrnAt this point I also need to let people understand that I, for 6 years worked in a hospital and for most of that time I was a patient advocate. So, please, understand, that I know of what I speak.rnrnrnThe insurance hassles……. and ONLY because of the office……I was in close contact with my insurance company the entire time (which the doctor’s staff was unaware of), and they were extremely supportive of the surgery. I was by told by the office that my claim was submitted and it was not. I was told it was declined and requested more information and it was not. I kept the recording from the insurance company on my phone…..they called me the DAY they finally REALLY rec’d my submission and approved it and left the approval number on my machine. The office staff just continued…..(even though I already rec’d the approval which they were unaware I knew about), tossed me around and around and AROUND with respect to getting my approval by this young inexperienced staff. And, while I’m aware everyone likes to blame the insurance companies….. in this case I KNOW it was not so. I really never wanted to ever go back to that office after the surgery because of the way they treated me. My PCP encouraged me not blame the doctors and that to continue my post op follow ups which I have done.rnrnHowever, all is NOT lost…..if you are lucky enough to have Nino as your nurse, he is the saving grace of that entire staff. The other nurses I found to harsh, uncaring and highly insensitive. I found the nursing staff other than Nino, where not only NOT helpful but never fully address any of my concerns…….I had to get most of my answers from obestity.com..certainly NOT from any of the nursing staff..(unless I was fortunate enough to get Nino on the phone). rnrnI also found little to NO aftercare programs via the office, ABSOLUTELY NO…….. support system…….absolutely nothing available to me. And if I called I seemed like a bother.rn ……………I don’t call anymore. I would rate the office staff -10. That is MINUS 10.rnrnWould I have the surgery again. YES……but would I go through what this office staff but me through………I think not.rnrnIt’s only when I actually have an appointment and physcially see the doctor that I get any sence of well being or \”aftercare\”. The doctor’s are patient and wonderful. I have only had those terrible experiences with the office staff and NEVER EVER with the doctors. The doctors i would rate +10. that is a PLUS 10.rnrnI am also very fortunate because my insurance company calls me monthly to check up and see how I’m doing and if I have any questions….re: diet or any general concerns. They are and have been the ONLY ones other than face to face with the doctor’s themselves that have shown any concern or caring. rnrnrn

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was positive. He and his staff were very professional and friendly. Future patients of Dr. Abkin should know that he is straight forward and has a very knowledgable staff. The before and aftercare programs are very important. You must take it very seriously so as not to add any risk to your health. Overall rating on Dr. Abkin and office would be an 8.5 this is a high grade with always knowing they need to keep up with the changing times and room for improvement. Surgical competence is very important, but if a Dr has no bedside manner it is not easy to put your life in their hands.

My first impression of Dr. Abkin was quite favorable. He must do hundreds of orientation sessions, but he was fully involved and very patient with questions. One on one, he is very good at explaining the process and very knowledgable, even for obscure questions. rnrnHis office staff is very competent and responsive. I’ve been particularly impressed by the insurance person, Karla.rnrnThe surgery process and aftercare are very well thought out. All bases are covered in a format that is easy to follow and very supportive.rnrnTo me, surgical competence is paramount and Dr. Abkin certainly has that. As an added bonus, his personality and style are also top notch. On a scale of 1-10, I’m thinking Dr. Abkin is an easy 10.

On January 10th 2008 I had the absolute pleasure of meeting my surgeon Dr. Abkin at a weight loss seminar hosted at St.Peter’s University in New Brunswick, NJ. After the seminar Dr. Abkin took the time to meet with myself and my mom and briefly discuss my concerns and questions about weight loss surgery. After meeting Dr.Abkin and his staff, I knew this is where i belonged. Dr. Abkin and his staff are truly angels. The staff are not only friendly and accommodating but they are truly interested and concerned with your well being as a patient. Dr. Abkin, along with his staff take the time to make sure that every care and concern are addressed and that you are 100% ready for not only your weight loss surgery, but your life long journey. On May 12th 2008 I went in for my surgery without a care in the world. I knew that I was in safe hands. I walked into the OR and saw Dr. Abkin and was ready to roll! I knew that everything was going to go smoothly, and it did! After surgery Dr.Abkin checks on you to make sure you are comfortable and okay. He came in to check on me every day I was in the hospital and on discharge day was there to wish me well and let me know that I did awesome and would continue to do so. Dr.Abkin and his staff make you feel at ease and keep encouraging you throughout your journey. I can not thank Dr.Abkin along with his staff for helping me make and fulfill this life changing difference.

I don’t even know where to begin… Dr. Abkin is amazing! I had my surgery about 15 months ago. I remember when I first met Dr. Abkin- he was so charming and calm. He immediatly put me at ease. And, even though that office is always packed with patients and, you sometimes have to wait a while, when he comes to see you, he takes his time and answers every single question you may have. He doesn’t rush you; explains everything in detail. He helped me see that I could go further than I thought with this surgery (Lap Band). When I felt discouraged he helped me see that it’s ok to fall once in a while, as long as we continue moving forward. Dr. Abkin helps you find the solution to your weight problem if you’ve hit a wall so you can continue losing weight. I can’t even begin to say how wonderful I think he is… TRULY! I would recommend (without reservations) Dr. Abkin to anyone wanting to have Lap Band surgery!!!

Dr. Abkin has a smile that lights up a room. When he looks at you, you feel that he is totally concentrating on you and how you feel. He was absolutely wonderful answering all my questions before surgery. In the OR, he was kind and compassionate and took time with me. He knew I was nervous and was very reassuring. After the surgery, he visited me daily and really listened to what I had to say. And he also reacted to my needs. Being a nurse myself, I know many surgeons have a poor bedside manner. Not Dr. Abkin….he has a GREAT bedside manner and really makes you feel like you are the only person in the world and takes all the time you need. Nothing is rushed. You really feel like he is there for you.rnrnYes, Dr. Abkin stresses a structured aftercare program. Before surgery, you had to attend a class on the program to make sure you understood what was expected of you and what the plans were. They were very thorough and you knew exactly what to expect. I felt very prepared for surgery.rnrnThe risks of surgery was addressed several times very thoroughly and bluntly. Dr. Abkin’s nurse practitioner was very blunt and went over everthing that could possibly go wrong. She sited complications that happened in the past and why they did. She was very good. Dr. Abkin reiterated them all also. rnrnAs for my incisions, the are healing nicely with no skin infections. He even took time to try to use previous scars as sites to minimize scaring. Very caring professional.rnrnI would rate Dr. Abkin 10 out of 10. I have already recommended him to others. His bedside manner and surgical competence are great.

Patients will really enjoy Dr. Abkin becuse as i said he explains the surgery you are having right down to the diet and never left anything out that was going to not happen, also answers all questions you have spends time with you doesnt rush you out of his office. Dr. Abkin cant emphasize enough of the aftercare you need to follow. He addressed the risks of surgery at first visist and just before surgey. I first met Dr. Abkin at the seminar my friend and I went to pre-consult. It was there that we learned all about the surgery, including the pros and cons. His staff was amazing – very polite and very thorough. After the seminar, we made our appointment, and that was the next time I saw Dr. Abkin. I fell in love with his manner, and professionalism. He has a great sense of humor, that really makes it easier when you’re in pain, in the hospital. If my impression has changed over time, it is only for the better. While sometimes it is hard to get a hold of his office staff as they are extremely busy, they do get back to you as soon as they can. Prior to surgery, they hold a three hour \”class\” that covers all of the basics, including aftercare, diet, consent forms, etc. Overall, I would rate Dr. Abkin a 10 on a scale of 10.

My first impression: I met him for the first time at a seminar. I thought he was well informed and to the point. I also felt that I could trust him–which is an issue with me–trust him to the point of getting to the next step, a consultation.rnDuring the consultation he told me I would have to lose more weight (I had already lost 106 lbs) and due to certain health issues I would probably have to have a minor procedure done to avoid a complication and also that I needed basically all my doctors to give me the green light to set a date. I was disappointed because I think my expectations might have been too high but I realized that Dr. Abkin was looking out for my best interests. Because of that, I trusted him more and respected him. He isn’t a bs artist and would’t be bullied.rnHis office staff is very helpful and kind. They seem to anticipate my requests before they even come out. They are professional, but not detached. They’re warm and I felt able to let my guard down.rnThere was nothing I didn’t like about Dr. Abkin–maybe I wish he had his own nutritionists and metabolic doctors on staff so I could go to the one office rather than having to make multiple appointments.rnFuture patients should know that he is trustworthy and worth looking into. His reputation and track record are impeccable. On a personal note, I have always been distrustful of doctors and avoided them most of my life because I felt I was being judged and because they were cold and humorless. Dr. Abkin has a sense of humor and is disarming which allowed me to relax which is key because I have anxiety issues.rnHe does emphasize aftercare and has a structured aftercare program called The Program.rnHe addressed the risks of surgery by telling me the plain truth and urging me to register on this website as well as ClarityMD for more infor.rnOn a scale of 1-5, I would rate him a five (highest)rnSurgical competence or bedside manner, which is better. I guess it’s a matter of degrees, but I would have to say both are equally important as long as it’s understood I wouldn’t let an idiot with a bad rep do my surgery even if he had a sparkling personality.rn

I liked Dr. Abkin from the first time I met him. He was very friendly and took his time to answer all my questions and explained everything to me detail by detail. I felt very comortable with him and after speaking with Dr. Abkin all my fears about having the surgey disappeard. His staff was wonderful too. They were all very friendly and understanding.rnThe day of the surgey I was nervous but before being taken into surgery Dr. Abkin and the doctor assisting him came to visit me. Again, Dr Abkin explained what was going to happen and I once again felt 100% confident that everything would be ok. After the sugery Dr. Abkin was there when I woke up and visited me the 2 days I was in the hospital. The day of the surgery I was up walking around. The funniest thing I remember is when I was first brought to my room I had to use the rest room and was told to wait for the nurse (of course I didn’t listen thinking it would take forever for a nurse to come) I got up and went and as I was walking to the restroom here came the nurse (yes I was caught LOL). She could not believe that after a major surgery I was up walking around on my own. I remember also I started losing weigth immediately. I remember looking at my watch and seeing how it was fitting loser.rnTo me Dr. Abkin is the best surgery in the world and the baratric surgery is a good option for people who can not lose weight. If you have the surgey make sure you do it for you and no one else. I did it for me and I am glad I did. If you do decide to have it research the surgery, the doctor snd the hospital. I researched the surery for 3 years before having it done and still read up on it.

I like Dr. Abkin. He seems to know his stuff. He reminds he of Dr. Nick from the Simpsons, which always makes me smile! I did not see the surgeon in the hospital until the morning I was discharged.

He is the greatest surgeon. He is very patient, understanding and willing to ask questions. His staff has been wonderful too easy to make appts and generally caring people. I would definetely recommend this surgeon and his practice Advanced Laporoscopic surgeons. He did a wonderful job….no complications! They have classes before surgery and explain everything they even go over everything you will be given during your hospital stay. You even get to check over the doctors orders at the final class. He has such a high success rate and he is truly a blessing.

Thought he was great, ans. all questions the group had for him and expressed that the Lab Band was a Tool, not a magic bill.rnBoth he and his staff, including the Insurance Dept. could not do enough to accomidate you. rnOnly saw Dr. Abkin for a second before my surgery for him to say hi. Then off I went to the OR room.

Update 04/23/07: Still love Dr. Abkin but am TERRIBLY bummed that he no longer accepts my insurance. He has been dropping out of insurance plans left and right lately so make sure you check to see if he accepts yours! I may have to look for another surgeon now. I will have to see. I do have out of network benefits but I am not sure I want to pay 20% of another complication like I had in Feb ’07.rnrnDr. Abkin: My first impression of him was that there is just something about him that makes you like him. He is very friendly, has a good sense of humor, knows his stuff. As an added bonus, after a while you also realize how devastatingly handsome he is (I understand this is not at all relevant but, hey, I thought some of you might like to know…). I went to see him for the first time in June of 2005. I did not go to see him again until December of 2005 and I pretty much assumed that he would not remember me from Eve. But he actually did which impressed me. I also assumed he would not remember me when I went for my one month post-op appointment (if you have ever gone to his office, you would know what I mean…HERDS of people go in and out of there all day…how could he remember everyone?!). Not only did he remember me, but he commented that it felt like more than a month since he had seen me (which it was…it was 6 weeks). So, again, that impressed me. And his blue eyes REALLY impressed me but, okay, enough about that. I think he is a fantastic, highly gifted doctor. I am saying that because I am currently a 2-month post-op with nary a complication. How would I describe his office staff? Hmm…well, let me point out the highlights. The guy that takes your vitals (blood pressure, pulse, weight) is named Nino. He is awesome…always courteous and upbeat. The lady who submitted my insurance is Kathleen. At first I have to admit I hated her (because she submitted my forms almost a week later than she said she would). However, AFTER that I thought she was wonderful. She was NEVER rude to me the 7,245 times I called her before I got approved. So…snaps to Nino and Kathleen. Now…the front-desk staff? I am not too impressed but I think that is because they are SO SWAMPED (again…see herd comment above). They are probably really great but just have zero personality from being frantic all day (that is my guess, anyhow). Overall, I give Dr. Abkin and his staff two thumbs up. I am so glad I chose him and would recommend him to anyone seeking WLS.rn

Dr. Abkin is intelligent and skilled, I liked him right away after hearing him speak at the information seminar. He and all of his office staff are kind, have a good sense of humor, and are up for any questions you needed answered. Dr. Abkin made me feel well-informed and confident in my choice.

Dr. Abkin is wonderful! He’s straightforward, honest and takes his time with me to answer all of my questions. The office is very busy due to so many patients and at times it can be overwhelming but don’t let it scare you! These surgeons have the best record in all of New Jersey!

My first impression of Dr. Abkin came from a friend who had her surgery through him and loved him. I went to his seminar (which is very professionally done) and didn’t think too much other than he knows his stuff. My consultation with him went very well and my personal impression was that he was caring, dedicated to what he does and a very busy man. I will say that Dr. Abkins experience in bariatric surgery is superior. He has a knowledgable office staff and the procedures set up so everything runs as smoothy as possible. I would highly recommend Dr. Abkin!!

Dr. Abkin spoke at the information seminar I attended in August 2005. There was something about his manner that made me feel very comfortable. The entriee practice had been highly recommended to me by my internist. rnI met Dr. Abkin two weeks later at the surgical consult. He was informative, patient and understanding of my many questions. He took a great deal of time to explain options. I felt immediately comfortable with him. He has a fabulous smile which helps put you at ease. What I later found out is that he has an amazing memory for details about his patients. When I saw him prior to surgery he did a great job of reassuring me and putting me at ease. Unfortunately I did not get to see him at my one week post op. appointment but saw him again at one month. He greeted me by asking how I was and how was school and my students. I was shocked that he remembered that I am a school principal. I know he has so many patients.rnDr. Abkin inspires confidence with his knowledge, skill and warm manner.rnI have recommended Dr. Abkin to two other people that are considering this surgery. I would recommend him to others as well. The way the entire practice is run is efficient with the major focus on patient education. If you are a patient of this group you can not go into surgery without being fully informed.Plus you are well prepared for after surgery. The monthly support groups are a great benefit, at no charge.rnYes the office is very busy and sometimes you have to wait a long time. To me that is a positive. Dr. Pupkova left the practice and I do not know if they have replaced her. So I am sure it will continue to be busy. My one year post op. visit is coming up in November. I look forward to sharing my success with Dr. Abkin and having a chance to talk to him. I feel that I owe much of my success to him. If he had not inspired the confidence in me to go forward with the surgery, I would not be 100 pounds lighter now.

Dr. Abkin was Great. It seemed he generally cared for his patients. The office staff was OK, though it was a little cramped, but that wasnt a problem. He really talked to me about after care and let me know the risks of the surgery. I’ve never seen a surgeon for this type of work before, so I have nobody to compare to, but Dr. Abkin seemed like a great surgeon, both manner-wise, and competency-wise!

Slimming Down

My first visit to Dr. Abkin occurred June 2005. The staff was routine oriented but yet very courteous. Dr. Abkin appeared to be very informative and concerned about my overall health. In the beginning of my first visit Dr. Abkin appeared to treat me in a very routine manner. I felt as though he would never remember me if I chose to go through with the surgery or not. I was not impressed. However as my visit progressed Dr. Abkin began to inquire about my health and my decision to go for the lap band and not gastric bypass. Dr. Abkin proceeded to explain the differences between the surgeries and the importance of selecting the right one. He then wanted to know my fears and anxiety with regard to the surgery. Now I am impressed! In the closing of my visit I elected to have gastric bypass and not the lap band. I was immediately scheduled for an educational class and surgery pending insurane approval.

Dr. Abkin is WONDERFUL!!! I knew the first time I met him that he was the one I was going to have as my surgeon. Very personable, even with the hubby. He’s a little bit of a jokester too…He just sends out good vibes. The office is a little understaffed, but I know they are looking for more people. I would recommend Dr. Abkin to anyone who wants to have surgery. Go to a seminar you’ll see for yourself

Dr Abkin is terrific!!!! He is a caring doctor who takes the time to talk to you and explains everything. The office staff is terrific, esp Josephine. Thanks for everything. Dr Abkin is the best, he goes out of his way to make sure you are doing good. He stresses that this is a tool to lose weight, you still need to work within the program and stresses the importance of eating right and healthy. My ONLY complaint was I didn’t know I couldn’t have any coffee in the hospital and had a very bad caffine headache. I might have been told but there is so much imformation exchange.

I went to the new patient orientation on July 29, 2004 and found it to be very informative and helpfull. The Advanced Laporascopic Associates practice requires that everyone considering WLS, attend this seminar. Dr. Alexander D. Abkin, Dr. Bertha and Dr. Pupkova, the entire team were in attendance and all were very knowledgeable in the field of WLS.

Dr. Abkin won me over before he opened his mouth… with his warm sparkling eyes and beautiful smile. When he spoke he was very candid and honest. It was very evident that he is a knowledgable, skillful and experienced surgeon, who understands how the obese person is affected both psychcologically and physically. I love his witt, which I find to be an ice breaker and to have a very calming effect on his audience.

During the Q & A session the surgeons took the time to answer all questions, in a professional and yet down to earth manner. I feel that no one was rushed and no questions that were asked were unanswered.

At the orientation, we were informed of the “Program for Life” and aftercare was very much stressed. I was able make my appointments for the surgical consultation, psych eval, and nutritional eval at this time… one after the other for the following Thursday. I left this seminar feeling like someone really cared, was compassionate and wanted to help me to live instead of just exist as I had been doing for the last 2 years.

On the day of my surgical consultation, Dr. Abkin just confirmed that that I had made the right choice of whom I would entrust with my life. I worked in the medical field and I was very satisfied and impressed with his being blatantly honest but also very respectful and compassionate. I was a very high surgical risk and he advised me of this, which was very responsible on his part. He was also very perceptive and calming while still being frank. He listened to what I had to say and took time to answer any questions that my husband and I asked him. We felt as if we had known him for years. He spoke about the surgery being a tool and the commitment I would need to make for the surgery to work. My husband and I left his office feeling comfortable with my decision, both to have surgery and in selecting Dr. Abkin as my surgeon.

I was very impressed with Josephine who handles the insurance. she is very knowledgeable in reference to insurance companies and how to handle them. She is also very friendly and has a calming effect. Sid and Linda were also very nice and very helpful. I have nothing but praise for everyone in this practice.

My husband and I attended the pre-op class. I feel they gave me all the information I needed for pre op and post op. Very thorough nutritional information was provided by the nutritionist and a booklet was given to us. Dr. Abkin also attended this class and again answered all questions and gave us more information on pre and post op.

My first impression of Dr Abkin was that he seemed to genuinely care about his patients and that he was willing to answer questions I might have.

When I had my surgery, my first impression was confirmed. He was very caring and comforting both before and after the surgery was complete.

His office staff was great about getting my ins approval very quickly. They were on top of making sure that I had everything I needed in my chart before surgery. They were always courteous and friendly.

I can’t think of anything not to like about Dr Abkin. He is truly a wonderful doctor.

He places a very strict emphasis on proper nutrition and exercise habits, both before and after surgery.

His office offers monthly support groups for post-ops. I attended one before my surgery, to get a feel for what it would be like. One of his partners was in attendance to answer questions from the group members. There was also a moderator present to keep the meeting moving along smoothly.

Dr Abkin was very clear about the risks of surgery. They were discussed at the new patient seminar, privately in his office, and also given to us in writing.

Overall, I would say he’s an excellent surgeon, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone interested in wls.

He is extremely well versed in wls and has an excellent bedside manner. I honestly can’t say enough good things about him.
