New Jersey Banded Gastric Bypass (The Capella Procedure)

The Banded Gastric Bypass (The Capella Procedure) is a minimally invasive bariatric surgical procedure that adds an additional restrictive component to the bypass.  A non-adjustable band is placed at the end of the gastric pouch to help maintain restriction.  It offers the consistency of the bypass surgery with the permanence of a band.

Advantages of the Capella Procedure:

  • Very successful weight loss procedure, especially in the severely obese
  • Operative times regularly 60 to 75 minutes long
  • Maintains long term restriction with a non-adjustable band which does not stretch
  • Safe with an extensive track history of success

Disadvantages of the Capella Procedure:

  • Complications can be serious, even fatal, however are rare
  • Eating requires more effort. Chewing carefully is central to eating comfortably and tolerating greater varieties of food
  • Vitamins are recommended for life
  • Single 8-10 cm midline incision
  • 1% develop incisional hernias
