Resources Surgery Preparation Psychological Evaluation

Bariatric Psychological Evaluation

It is essential as part of the pre-operative assessment process, that all patients undergo a NJ Bariatric Psychological Evaluation. Many candidates have been treated for or are currently being treated for psychiatric disorders.

For the most part, such treatment does not disqualify you from Gastric Bypass Surgery and Lap Band Surgery. It is recommended that you choose a Psychiatrist who specializes in Bariatric Psychological Evaluations, however if you are currently being treated for psychiatric disorders, you may want to complete the psychological evaluation with your current provider.

What is the Psychological Evaluation looking for:

  • Your history of obesity
  • Diet history and eating behavior
  • Your understanding of the lifestyle changes you will need to make post-surgery
  • Your mental/psychological health and any past or current diagnoses
  • History or patterns of substance abuse (drugs and alcohol)
  • Your living arrangements and support systems
  • Your understanding of surgery and your exercise of free will
